Enabling iCloud storage disables app

When I enable iCloud storage, the app freezes. When I terminate and restart the app, it doesn't get past the splash screen.  The only way forward I have found is to delete and reinstall.  The problem is completely reproducible for me. I'm using the current version of the app, and get the same behavior on an iPhone 5S iOS 10.3.1 and iPad 3 iOS 9.3.5.

    Mario,

I haven't seen this before and haven't heard of others with the problem.  Do you have iCloud enabled on the device?  Are you signed in?  The app shouldn't hang if your not, but I'm just trying to understand your situation.

    Bill,

Thanks for for the quick response.

I've been using iCloud for years with other apps, and they continue to work fine. I'm signed in, etc.

This is not a critical problem for me.. I can live without it.  But if there's anything I can do to help diagnose the problem, let me know.

Given this happens on both iOS 10.3.1 and iOS 9.3.5, it is likely it has something to do with how your iCloud account is set up, however I have no idea what that could be.

I've looked at the crash logs that Apple supplies.  I see one crash on Pro having to do with iCloud but it looks to be a problem deep in Apple's code.  I don't see anything for Plus (you didn't say what you are running)

I'm glad this is not critical for you because this is going to be tricky to figure out.  It may not even be anything we have control over.  At this time we may have to just wait and see if anyone else encounters this and try to figure out the pattern.

I'm running Pro on both devices.

It occurred to me that I could try this on macOS too, as I have SSPro there too -- and indeed, when I enable iCloud, CPU usage goes to 100% and the app freezes.

If there are logs or diagnostics I can perform, let me know.

One difference is that the Mac version restarts and does not hang, and after a couple of dialog boxes (asking did I want to remove locations.txt and and .skyset file from local storage) it appears to run with iCloud enabled.

I retried the iOS app after this, but it still hangs when I switch over to iCloud and then has to be reinstalled.

It sounds like something on the iCloud drive is corrupted. For debug, you might try clearing the iCloud data.

Since the app launches on the Mac, you might try the following:

In finder, go to the iCloud drive, SkySafari Pro folder,

back it up locally, then delete the contents.

If that works, you can try loading back files a few at a time or just press on and redo anything you need. The latter may be the best since you say it's not critical.

Another test is log out of iCloud and log back in, although Apple does want to delete some things and make you re-download them.

    Good luck!

Great idea. I removed all the files. For one of them got a warning from the Finder that it had "unresolved conflicts".  When I changed the freshly-installed SSP on iOS to use iCloud, this time it worked.  So then I tried moving some of the other files back, and that wedged it again; removing them would not unwedge it.  So, I removed them all again, reinstalled the app, and I'll re-enter the data I need.

    Thanks!

Great! Yes, it's almost certainly one or more corrupted files. At this point I would not try using any old files. Just redo the data as needed. Also, add new data just a bit at a time so you can pinpoint the action if the error returns.

I would not necessarily start from scratch.  I doubt the files are corrupted, just the version metadata that iCloud uses.  I would try again with what you have and see if the problem occurs again.
