Is a null modem needed to connect the SS bluetooth device to the Orion DB9/RS232 cable? This will be used with a xx12i purchase but not yet received. And if so should it be female/female or some other config?

  No, a Null modem adapter is not needed.  This is generally only used when connecting the device to a computer for programming.
