I'm running StarryNight Pro v6.4.3 for MacOS. When I launch the application it always opens a window titled "untitled1". Is it possible to specify a specific Favorite to open on startup? Thanks.

Richard Bareford I'm using Windows 7 and always get the same title at start. I haven't found a way to start with a favorite title. What does work is to open your favorite in a new window and then in Options click "Save Current Options as Default". The next time you start Starry Night "untitled1" will have the same settings as your favorite.

Greg Loskorn Richard I've tried that, and it works for the most part, but not everything comes back. For example, I like to have the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia stick figures highlighted to make my telescope alignment a little easier, but even when I select "Save Current Options as Default", those stick figures never come back on startup, I always have to recall a Favorite for those to come back.

Richard Bareford Maybe that's a MAC thing. I haven't found any option that didn't return on startup after saving to default, including stick figures. I'm not sure what you mean by "highlight" though. The constellations are either all on or all off, I didn't know there was a way to have only some on.

Greg Loskorn Yes it's possible to highlight only certain constellations. I wanted to see only those two, along with the North Star's circular path, since that's what shows in the aiming reticle for my telescope. (See attachment)

Richard Bareford Auto ID will show the centered constellation and allow you to select one other elsewhere. But if you select a third the previous off-center constellation will disappear. If you save the option and then re-start whatever constellation that's centered will appear, not necessarily the one shown when you last shut down. Are you doing something different to save specific constellations in your favorites?

Greg Loskorn Here are the instructions I received a couple of years ago to highlight only certain constellations. It still works for the most part, with the exception being that now I get the entire Ursa Major constellation as opposed to just the Big Dipper outline. Luckily I saved a Favorite back then that shows only the Big Dipper without the rest of the constellation. I guess things have changed with the current version from whatever version I was on in 2008.
I don't know what version I was running when I got these instructions.
"Hi,
You can select individual constellations by starting with all constellations turned off, and then right-clicking in the area of the sky and choosing Select (and Select Other if it doesn't choose the constellation automatically). To select more than one constellation, select one and then hold down the shift key while selecting the second.
Under the Options -> Constellations menu on the left side of the screen, the checkboxes under Auto-Identify are the features that will display for the selected constellations, so you probably just want Stick Figures and maybe Labels.
Alternately, if you just want the simpler figures of the Big Dipper and the W, open the Options tab -> Constellations menu, and mouse over the words Stick Figures beside the last checkbox. When it turns into a button, click it, and change Kind to Asterisms instead of Astronomical.
You can't select individual asterisms -- they'll just show up as full constellations -- but if you change Stick Figures to Asterisms and then check the box for Stick Figures so that they all show up, you'll probably get what you need since there are not many of them in the catalogue.

Richard Bareford Finally got around to checking this out; works as described. Pretty cool. Thanks for the information! And you're right, you can't save the selections. The options are still there, though, after a restart.
