SkyFi 3 + Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro + Celestron StarSense = works!

Originally from ticket #30280.

Hi there.

I just thought I would update you to let you know that this combination works fine. Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro mount with a Celestron StarSense for skywatcher mounts, plus a Celestron GPS module and your SkyFi 3 unit. Controllable from an Android tablet running Sky Safari Plus version 5.

Everything has to be connected up and powered on first, followed by powering on the SkyFi3, and then connecting from the tablet. I have the SkyFi unit set to my Wireless router rather than ad-hoc. I just used a bog standard USB cable from the SF3 to the base of the Celestron StarSense handset.

(Just in case anyone else needs to know!)

Hi Gary - this is good news. I have an AZ-EQ6 so I assume it will also work. I will be using an iPad instead of an Android device but I assume that will not be an issue. One question for you - what Scope Type did you select in SkySafari?

    Thanks

Hi. Sorry for the delay. I set the app up for the Skywatcher Synscan setting and it worked a treat :) Hope that helps.

I just got a StarSense for my Skywatcher AZ-EQ6. I am contemplating getting the SkyFi 3. I assume the SkyFi 3 is required because the newer StarSense hand controllers now have a mini-USB port instead of a RS-232 port connection. I also assume that I have to supply the mini-USB to USB cable to connect the SkyFi to the StarSense HC. Is this correct?

    John,

You could use either SkyFi 2 or SkyFi 3.  Both have a USB output.  If you get a SkyFi 3, make sure the firmware is updated to the latest.  I recall we had to make a change a version or two ago to support the USB chipset they used in the new hand controller.

Neither SkyFi 2 or 3 come with the USB-A to USB-mini cable, so you would have to supply that.

Bill, when I first got the StarSense for SkyWatcher, you wee not able to get my SkyFi-USB to work with the chipset in the hand controller.  So I had to get the SkyFi 3.  So have you gotten the SkyFi-USB to work with the Celestron USB connection chipset?

    Jack,

I might be misremembering.  It is so hard to keep track of what works with what.  I think you are correct that the new Celestron hand controllers don't work with the SkyFi 2.
