SkyFi 3 | Cannot Connect To Existing WiFi Network (OSX/iOS) [Unresolved]

I can’t connect/control to my AVX from my Mac/iPad/iPhone when it’s on my home network and my SkyFi 3 is on the same network. I can connect and control my AVX via the SkyFi network. I can get my SkyFi to join my home network. I can get SkySafari to recognize that the SkyFi device is connected to the home network. I just can’t get SkySafari to connect and control my AVX via my home network.

Is this something SkyFi 3 should be able to do?

SkyFi 3 (firmware 1.3.4), Celestron AVX, MacBook Pro (late2016), iPhone X, iPad Pro, SkySafari 5, AirPort Extreme (with satellite AirPort Express) 2.4/5 GHz.

    Ben,

We've already discussed some of this on Cloudy Nights.  Thanks for bringing this over to our forums.

This may have been a recent firmware change, but in 1.3.4 I'm seeing the access point network still active when I join my home network.  This is actually a really good thing.  I need to ask the firmware person if this was intended.

So with 1.3.4 (and possibly earlier) you can join the "SkyFi" access point network and get to the SkyFi configuration pages at 10.0.0.1.  When I do so I se that my SkyFi's IP address is 10.0.1.135 as well.  This is its address on my home network.  When you have configured SkyFi to join you network and go to 10.0.0.1 (after joining the SkyFi network), what IP do you see it says it has.  If it is anything other than 10.0.0.1, then that means it has successfully joined the home network.

Assuming it did join the home network, If you also join the home network, do you get to the configuration pages by going to the advertised address?

    Bill,

When I configure my SkyFi to be a client of my WiFi at the 10.0.0.1 page it is assigned an IP ADDRESS 19#.###.1.100 (some numbers redacted). This is recognized and connected in SkySafari when connected to the SkyFi network. However, when I’m on my home network the SkyFi device is not recognized even when I manually enter the above IP address.

i suspect this could be a problem with my lack of knowledge of networks.

Ps I can’t seem to get to the configuration page if I’m on my home network. However, I can get to it when I’m on the SkyFi network even when the it’s in the client mode but still only when 10.0.0.1 is entered in the browser.

Let me try to be explicit since I'm not sure what you are doing.  In the steps below, I'm assuming you have configured the SkyFi to join the home network.

    1. Join the SkyFi network, not the home network
    2. In a browser, go to 10.0.0.1
    3. On the Status page, I believe you are telling me it says the SkyFi IP address is 19#.###.1.100, right?  Does your home computer also have a similar address that ends in something other than 100?  If so the SkyFi has joined the home network.
    4. Now disconnect from the SkyFi network and join the home network.
    5. You should now be able to go to 19#.###.1.100 in a browser and see the same configuration pages.  Does that work?

No, When I get to your step 5 I cannot get to the configuration page while I’m on my home network using 19#.###.1.100.

Any further thoughts on this proble? Is it something that might be fixed on a future firmware update?

I'm really not sure what is going on in your case.  What type or router do you have?

I have an Airport extreme as well and I know this should work.  It may be something about the way it is configured.

You never answered my question about the IP address of other machines on the network.  Do they look similar to the 19#.###.1.100 address?  My Airport router vends out addresses that look like 10.0.0.XXX.  It may be that the 19X address (is it 198 ??) if the self assigned address a device uses when it can't get an address from the router.

On the configure page it assigns 192.168.1.100 as the IP address when choose "Connect to Another Network". The other machines on my network are 10.0.0.xxx. If I disable DHCP on the configure page in lets me reassign a 10.0.0.xxx IP address to the SkyFi 3. The popup messages on the configure page say that the SkyFI 3 has been reconfigured and connected. However, in both cases I cannot connect to my telescope in SkySafari while on my home network🤬🤯.

When you bypass DHCP and assign you own address, can you see the config page at that address?  Not you will need to be connected to the home network when you try.

Could you attach a screen shot of what the SkyFi config Status and Wireless pages looks like?  You really do not need to worry about the IP addresses being displayed as they are all local to your network.

So these screen shots show the device configured for Access Point mode, not Client mode.  When set up in Client mode you should be able to still get to the device at the old Access Point IP address of 10.0.0.1.  Of course, you need to connect to the SkyFi network to do so.

You did say you were running 1.3.4 firmware, right?

    Yes on the firmware 1.3.4.

Yes this is just prior to hitting the Apply Settings button when Connecting to Network.

Once I do that I can't seem to get back to the configure page whether I'm on my home network or the SkyFi network unless I do a factory reset.

OK, I don't understand what you are trying to do.  You say this is right before you hit Apply to change it to join you home network, but you haven't chosen you home network under Scanned Networks.  You need to do that and enter the network password before it can join the network.

You are right. The screenshot is before I selected the network and entered it’s password which I do before hitting the apply settings button every time I have tried.

....i.e., I do enter the network and password before I hit apply settings

I was never able to resolve this issue with my AirPort wifi network so I just continued to connect directly to the SkiFi III. However, I recently upgraded to a new non-Apple router. With my new wifi router I was easily able to connect my iPad, iPhone, or MacBook Pro to the SkyFi III without any problems using SkySafari 6 pro to control my Celestron AVX.

PS-The new router is a AmpliPhi. It is very fast, easy to set up, and has great signal strength.

PPS-Apple has decided to get out of the router buisness in any case.
