StarSense | Does SkySafari 6 Pro Support StarSense Alignment On macOS? (Answer: With Celestron WiFi = No; With USB-to-Serial =Yes | And VOTE UP To Support This Development)

Hello, I currently have SSP 5.0for Mac: It doesn't support Star sense over wifi. Does Sky Safari pro 6 support star sense over wifi connection? I find the current situation that it only supports star sense via Hand controller quite ridiculous when my IOS version does!

Regards

No, we have not implemented StarSense via Celestron Wi-Fi in the Mac version of SS6.  It is not clear if/when this will get implemented.

    Bill,

Purchased Sky safari pro 6 and then read your comment when looking for a solution. Given that there is no timeline to make the app & the Starsense compatible how can we switch out to another version that does work?

To be clear, the app is StarSense compatible when connecting through jack on the bottom of the StarSense hand controller.  It is not compatible when connecting via the Celestron Wi-Fi module.

When you say "how can we switch out to another version that does work", are you referring to another version of the app?  If so, there are none.  I am not aware of any Mac app that will connect using Celestron Wi-Fi and works with StarSense.

If you are just looking for another way to use SkySafari and StarSense, then you need to connect through the hand controller.  If you want to go wireless, then I recommend our SkyFi 3.  If connecting via a cable is ok, then you just need a USB cable to go from the Mac to the bottom of the StarSense hand controller (assuming you have the newer USB hand controller).

I have the Meade version of the Skyfi 3 called Stella. Would that work?

Other option as i understand your comment is to connect the mini USB on the hand controller to the USB port on the MAC?

    Hi Tony,

Both Meade Stella & SkyFi 3 will work when connected to the StarSense hand controller.  And, yes, mini USB on the StarSense hand controller to the USB port on the Mac will also work.

    Thanks!

The skysafari 6 on MacOS is such a good program and more comprehensive than the iOS/Android  versions and the starsense is becoming more prevalent too that it seems a pity that the ability to use starsense via the celestron wifi on Mac OS is not supported especially since the iOS and Android operating systems are.  Please update the program for this.  The use of a cable to do this these days is definitely a bit retro.

We need to work with Celestron to make this happen.  There is a fair amount of new user interface that needs to be written as well.  It is on our todo list but I can't promise when.

Hi Bill, I note your comments above re connection to Mac, however although I can control the scope, the control panel just shows Connect, Align, GoTo and Lock. How do I access the StarSense functions? Ive tried SkyFi and the USB connection to the StarSense handset.  There is no documentation on this stuff. SkyPortal works fine on an iPad but I would prefer SS on Mac with Connect and Align. ......Mac OS High Sierra/SkySafari 6 Pro/MacBook Pro

On the Mac, we only support connecting to the mount via the StarSense hand controller (not via the Celestron Wi-Fi module).  So you do all you StarSense alignment via the hand controller and then connect SkySafari through the bottom of the HC.

Ah, that explains it. In a word or two then, you don't support StarSense on the Mac (except insofar as SkySafari accesses the data held in the StsrSense hand controller once the alignment is done manually). Now.....I dont want to align using the hand controller (its cold outside) and I have at my disposal Mac & IOS equipment + USB + StarSense and SkyPortal - how do you recommend I align my scope and then use SkySafari on the Mac? Best wishes. Colin

You just can't do a StarSense alignment via the Mac.  You could do it via iOS, but the alignment model is stored in iOS SkySafari and the Mac version does not have access to it.  So if you want to not use the HC, you will have to only use SkySafari on iOS.

    Hello Bill,

Can I do the Starsense alignment with iOS including polar alignment, then go to home position, switch on and off. Remove the wifi and do a final alignment (no polar alignment) with the HC, then use SSP? (Shall I connect the wire to the HC once the Starsense alignment is done, or Can I connect at the repower on?).

    Thank you

    John

Other question please: I am able to connect the Mac and SSP6 to the Celestron Wifi, in the Telescope setup I can select Celestron Wifi actually. Then I can control the scope. However I guess SSP and the telescope are not aligned? So what is the proper sequence to use this Wifi feature with the Mac? Shall I do the alignement with Starsense on the HC? And control the telescope with the Mac and wifi?

    Thank you

The iOS app does not attempt to reproduce everything you can do from the StarSense hand controller.  In particular, it wont help you with polar alignment.  You would have to polar align before kicking off a StarSense alignment in SkySafari.

Yes, you can use the Mac version of SS6 to talk to the mount via Celestron Wi-Fi.  What isn't implemented on the Mac is the "wizard" that steps you through the alignment process.  However, alignment is very easy.  Center a star in the scope, select the same star in SkySafari, and then click "Align".  Do this for 3 stars that separated in RA by at least an hour and you should be good to go.

Note: you cannot do the StarSense alignment via the HC if you are using Celestron Wi-Fi.  The alignment mode will be in the HC and SkySafari will not know about it.  When using Celestron Wi-Fi all alignment *must* be done in SkySafari.  This is not true if you are connecting through the HC rather than Celestron Wi-Fi.

If you are running SkySafari on iOS or Android, then we now support Celestron's All-star Polar Alignment when using the Celestron Wi-FI scope type.  After you have done a star alignment using SkySafari, you should see an ASPA button in the final alignment panel.  It will kick off the polar alignment.

Is this still the case?  09/20/2021.  I've tried using wireless and also using the Star Sense hand controller(USB).  neither one yields results.  My equipment is CGX mount with Celestron wifi module,  star sense camera with hand controller and MacBook Pro. SkySafari Pro 6.
