[Bug - Needs Path To Reproduction] Observing List "Hang Up"

When I am working through an observing list I will select an object.  In the info screen, when I select "Create New Observation" nothing happens.  I can see the little circle going around and around at the bottom of the screen.

If I go to "Show observations" there is an entry for my new observation.  I can click on that entry and now I can enter my data on the screen.  When I hit the "done" button, nothing happens.

To get out of that screen, I can just choose another object and continue on my way.  Not the cleanest way to navigate through the screens.

I have a suspicion that perhaps your server is being overrun with data and can't keep up.  This is just a supposition on my part.

    Hi Joe,

Is it possible for you to make a little video showing this happening?  Maybe link us to it via dropbox.com?

Also, What version of SkySafari are you running?  Please look in the "About SkySafari" panel.

Finally, what OS are you running?

    Thanks!

    SkySafari6 version 6.1.0

    MacOs High Sierra 10.13.4

Are you suggesting I use my phone to video my screen and try to upload that to dropbox?  I've never done that but I suppose I could try.

You could use your phone.  Or, Quicktime software included with macOS will make a nice screen recording.

Unfortunately, I can not reproduce your issue.

    Thanks for your help!

What email address should I use to share the dropbox video?

FYI - I am running SkySafari6 on a MacBook Pro, an iMac, and an iPad.  Could the "hang up" be caused by SkySafari6 trying to update all three machines at the same time and it just can't keep up?

Thanks, Joe, that video is perfect!  Please do the following:

    1. Quit SS6
    2. Restart the app
    3. Search for NGC 6144
    4. Go Info
    5. Go More
    6. Go Create New Observation

Do you still get the spinning wheel?  Specifically, I'm looking to see if this happens right away, from the initial default state of the app when opened, or whether it requires other preceding steps to get the app into this particular state.

    Thanks!

    Hi Joe,

Your machines are not all synced together immediately when you create a observation.  So, I don't believe that using 3 machines is the issue.

    Thanks!

I always have the spinning wheel.  It never seems to stop.

I quit the ap, restarted it, and the ap works fine.  My problem occurs after a few new observations are recorded.  That's when the erratic behavior begins.

Good to know!  Would you mind sending me your observing list?

    Hi Joe,

I've uploaded your video to here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1a_R0KwGuW_M_BBN8gJIcLKNJig3WeePh/view?usp=sharing

If anyone else wants to see the bug in action and help us to reproduce this issue please check the link above.

    Thanks!

One more thought.  This problem is limited to the OS X ap.  I have never had this problem with SkySafari6 for iOS.

I recently attended the Texas Star Party, and having recently upgraded to SS6 Pro on my iPad4, I used SkySafari6 Pro for the first time to conduct my observing sessions out in the field. I transferred a number of existing lists from SS5 Pro, and created two new lists as well. The issue encountered was not specific to any one list....

Upon completing an observation and attempting to log it, the Edit/Create Observation action intermittently hung up. (There are a couple places where this process can be initiated...i.e. through the "Selection" pick or via the Observing list itself, it didn't matter which method was used). Upon triggering the action to log my observation sometimes SS6 Pro was delayed in bringing up the screen where one enters the Time, Location, Observing Conditions and Comments, and other times the "iOS wheel" simply spun and hung, and never brought up the screen where the observation is logged. Killing and re-starting the SS6 Pro application would sometimes result in the object being logged as observed, other times I had to re-try the Edit/Create Observation process. Needless to say this was a very frustrating problem to experience all throughout my observing in the field.

An update to this issue.  I have found the functionality does indeed work, but it is extremely slow.  If I wait anywhere from 10 to 15 seconds after clicking the "Create Observation" button, the proper screen finally appears.  Older versions of SkySafari were much quicker.

Any way to speed up this delay?

    Thank you

    Joe,

The person that works on that code is on vacation this week.  I will make sure she contacts you when she gets back.

I don't think the server is overloaded, we have budgeted for plenty of capacity.

The Mac code for this is almost identical to the iOS code.  It is surprising that it is slow on Mac but not iOS.

Can you give us an idea of how many Observing Lists and Observations you currently have?

I have 2,211 observations in 112 observing lists.

Yeah, that is more than most people have.  We made some optimizations on iOS to speed things up when you have lots of observations.  I think those made it into the macOS version, but perhaps not.  We'll check.
