SkyFi and problems connecting iPhone 7 and iPad mini4 (IOS 11.3.1) but no problems with older versions on iPad 3 (IOS 10)

ello All,

As the title suggests, troubles with my setup and a Sky Watcher HEQ5 Pro.  Funny it works fine with my iPad 3 and an older version of Sky Safari 3.  This is the older IOS (version 10).

It gives me a message "no internet connection" on the iPhone and iPad and then can't connect to Sky Safari 5 pro.  I want to upgrade to 6 but I don't think its a good thing if it doesn't work on this version.  I got it to work with earlier versions of IOS but I upgraded a couple of times I don't know when it stopped working and with what versions.  Any help would be appreciated.

I am almost ready to sell the SkyFi USB out of frustration.  Honestly, I thought I would like this product but now with their updates messing things I am giving this whole thing a second thought.

Thanks TimothySki

OK I figured out a couple of things

    1)  iPad 3 (IOS 9.3.1) works fine with the SkiFI USB with Sky Safari 5 pro and 6 plus

    2)  iPad 3 connects with the sky wire OK as well (direct connection to the iPad)

    3)  iPad mini 4 and iPhone 7 (IOS 11.3.1) cannot connect to the SkyFi-USB.  Message "no internet connection"

I think it has to do with the wifi hardware in an older SkiFi USB hardware.  The 802.1 a/b/g/n/ac wireless standard is standard in the mini and maybe not compatible with the SkiFi-USB.  Well I went ahead and purchase the latest Sky Safari 6 plus ($20) and tested it with my iPad 3.  Works fine.  Sad that my newest devices cannot connect.

    Hi Tim,

Please make sure you are connected to the SkyFi 3 Ad Hoc WiFi Network using the iPad Mini 4 and iPhone 7.  Using these iOS devices you connect to the SkyFi 3 Ad Hoc WiFi network via the iOS Settings > WiFi > SkyFi 3

    SkySafari 5/6 > Settings > Telescope > Setup > ScopeType: SkyWatcher SynScan

    SkySafari 5/6 > Settings > Telescope > Setup >  Enable Auto-Detect SkyFi + IP Address: 10.0.0.1 + Port Number: 4030

If you encounter the same error message please do the following:

    1. Capture a screenshot of the error message.
    2. Capture a screenshot of your SkySafari 5/6 Telescope Setup page.
    3. Capture a screenshot of your iOS Settings WiFi page.

Attach all screenshots to your post here.

I see no reason why the system works with iPad 3 but not iPad Mini 4 or iPhone 7.  There is a simple setting to correct here.

    Thanks!

    Tim,

Are you talking about the SkyFI 2 or SkyFi 3?  The older SkyFi 2 does not currently work with iOS 11.  This is Apple's bug.  They broke Ad Hoc networking in one of the iOS 11 updates.  I have submitted a bug report on it and they are aware of the issue.  No idea if or when it will be fixed.  I just tried again with their new 11.4 release and it is still broken.

When I try to join an Ad Hoc network, I get the message that there is no internet connection (which is normal and correct).  If you say "Join Anyway" it is start to connect but them fail and fall back to your previous network connection.

If you are using the newer SkyFi 3 (with the built-in rechargeable battery) then something else is going on.

Ok I have been responding to you through gmail but I guess that's not the best way.  I have an older SkyFI-USB.  The non lithium battery one and that is square.  All your labels  on the unit don't give model number or indications what version/model the Skyfi it is.

So I did get it to work.  This is on an iPad mini 4 with IOS 11.3.1 and I have a small video that I sent to you through gmail.  Maybe it just needs to been aligned first so I skipped that step during the initialization of the Skywater paddle.

I'm surprised you were able to get the SkyFi 2 (SkyFi-USB) to work.  Maybe there is a hardware component to the bug as well.  I have tried on my iPad and iPhone and am not able to get either one to join the Ad Hoc network.  I suppose it would work if you had the SkyFi join you home network since then it is no longer using an Ad Hoc network.

I don't know what you mean when you say you are responding via gmail.  You cannot just reply to forum messages that com through to your email client.  If you notice when you try to respond, the sender of these messages is

OK just got your message and yes I now know I have to respond through this forum.  I do have a small video that shows it is working.  Just yesterday, Apple released IOS 12 and I will update my iPhone 7 and try it.  I will leave my iPad mini 4 on 11.3.1 because it works fine.  I will let you know if IOS 12 works.
