Why Does Horizon Panorama Stop At 75 Degrees Of Altitude? (Answer: Coded That Way - For Now)

When I add my custom horizon panorama to SkySafari 6 Pro on both an iPhone X (iOS 11.3) and an iPad 4 (iOS 10), the panorama stops at 75 degrees of altitude.  Unfortunately, I have trees all the way to my zenith.  Is there something I can do to make the graphic go to the zenith?  Thank you.

    Hi Ricky,

Please include a screenshot of your panorama in SkySafari 6.

    Thanks!

Thank you for your help.  I had to change the png to 8-bit in Photoshop to get it to upload ti the site, but otherwise it should be the same.

    Hi Ricky,

I was looking for a screenshot of the pano in SkySafari, so we can see how it looks for you in the app.

    Thanks!

Got it, Ricky!  Now first let me say WOW! This is most impressive!  I've never seen anyone generate a pano with such detail regarding tree branches in the backyard.  This is extraordinary, and looks to be working perfectly on my iPad Mini 4.

So, looks like the files are in order.  But, not sure why its not working properly on your iPhone.

    Hmmmm?

Thank you!  This took a great deal of effort and I really became a little obsessed with it, but what good result doesn’t require a bit of obsession?  Ha.  All in all, it took almost 250 pictures to get that.  I’m hoping it really pays off.  It’s been cloudy every night here in north Mississippi for a month except for two days I couldn’t go out.

It looks to me like it is doing it on yours as well. Do you see how the branches stop at 75 degrees in a circle?  They should go all the way to the zenith.  I thought SS would wrap the top of the png like it does the grass at the nadir.

I was just concerned that the 75 degree stop was making the image fit in a sphere from -90 to 75 degrees instead of -90 to 90. If that is the case, I need to adjust the graphic.

Thank you so very much for your help.

Ah yes, right, I see now.  Well, we need Bill to comment here.  It may be that the code did not expect anyone to pano the entire sky all the way to the zenith.

I'm sure Bill will reply shortly.

It does look like the code only draws up to 75º.  We may have done this for performance reasons.  It is possible we could relax this in the future, but for now I'd assume 75º up is all you get.  Sorry.
