Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only) - Read EVERYTHING To Participate!

Invitation To Android Users:

Everyone here in the Community Forums (with an Android device) is invited to participate in the beta-testing cycle :)

Your beta-testing feedback, whatever you can contribute, will be invaluable to the success of SkySafari 6 for Android!

IMPORTANT: Beta Test User Requirements:

  • Email requirements: Users need a Google Account (@gmail.com) or a G Suite account to join in the beta test (see below).
  • Support Account requirements: Users must have Simulation Curriculum Support Account and must reply to this post; i.e. you are logged in to this website (see below).

How To Apply - 2 Parts:

    1. You must enter your @Gmail or G Suite email address (the one you use to login to Google Play to buy/download apps for your Android device) into the red bar on the bottom of this webpage.  Note, the red bar can be hidden if you have any kind of ad-blocking plugin installed.
    2. Please also reply to this post (in a comment below) if you can help us at this time.  Please outline your experience with SkySafari, including what versions of SkySafari you have run previously, what telescopes you are controlling, what kind of astronomy you are involved in, if you are a power user, etc.

Failing to follow the 2 step application process above will exclude you from the beta testing cycle.

When Accepted To Beta Test:

Purchasing The Beta: When you are accepted, you will be notified via an email (sent to your @Gmail/G Suite email address) that you are able to purchase the SS6 Android beta app from Google Play.

Accessing The SS6 Android Beta Testing Forum: When you are accepted you will see and have access to the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  The SS6 Beta Testing forum is hidden until you are accepted.

Please note, not all applicants will be immediately included in the beta-testing.  So, if you apply and do not hear back please be patient.

*** If accepted to the SS6 beta-testing forum please do NOT report bug/issues on this post.  See below for workflow ***

SS6 Android Beta Must Be Purchased:

You must purchase the beta app in order to participate in the beta testing process.  Both the beta for SS6 Plus and SS6 Pro are discounted 50% OFF.  This is the same discounted price that the apps will sell for during the first month promotion of the official public release.

You will be purchasing SkySafari 6 for Android in advance so that you can help test the features, identify and crush the bugs, and to ultimately refine and optimize the app for official public release (ETA end of August).

When SS6 for Android receives its official public release you will NOT be required to pay for the app again.

If we had a choice about it we would run the SS6 Android beta testing without having to make anyone pay upfront.  However -  given we must use the Google Play development environment we have no choice in this matter.  So, please accept that these are the parameters under which we must proceed at this time, and trust that through the beta-testing process we will, all together, improve the app such that the price paid now will be worth what will eventually become the refined and optimized end result.  If you have purchased SkySafari previously then you already know the standard to which we will hold this official public release.

The Process:

As you find bugs/issues in SkySafari 6 please first review the current discussions in this beta-testing forum (which is hidden until you are invited).  If your bug/issue has already been identified please comment on the existing post.  If your bug/issue has not been identified please create a NEW post in the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.

For clarity regarding this bug reporting process please see the Example Bug Report (hidden until you are officially invited)

Please do not submit tickets with bugs/issues.

How To Follow The SS6 Beta Forum:

As part of your participation we would appreciate that you follow the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  Following a forum means you will receive email updates when anyone creates a NEW post or comments/replies to one of the existing posts. This is important for two reasons.

  1. Following the forum ensures you receive email updates regarding all admin communications to the beta testers.  If admins make a post asking for assistance you will get an email update with that post.
  2. Following is also very important so that you have an on-going status report regarding bugs/issues identified, confirmed, requiring further testing, or have been resolved, etc.  This will help you stay on top of the overall process, and ensure you are not duplicating efforts where issues are already known and resolved.

To FOLLOW the SkySafari 6 Beta Testing community forum please see here.  Note, you must have been invited first, and have access to the forum before you can follow it.

Replying to Email Updates:

When you follow the SS6 Beta Testing forum you will receive email updates regarding new posts (and comments, if opted for).  Please do not reply to email updates using the "Reply" function.  Please first use the "View the comment" link to open the community forum post, then reply to the post.

This point is crucially important - so please understand the image below (this an example of an SS6 Beta Testing email update as seen using my web browser Yahoo email account).

If you use the email update "Reply" function your reply will not be added to the community forum discussion.

Hi, I am really waiting on the version 6 since it has been announced, mainly for all the sync features and the LiveSky integration (planning a list at home with the confort of the computer is the feature I want).

I am currently using the version 5 Pro as soon as I use my own telescope or when showing the sky objects to visitors at one of the two observatories I am member of so, yeah, I want to be part of the beta :)

    Thanks for your work.

Happy to help with testing. I use Sky Safari 5 Pro currently as my primary astronomy app and have used a number of other astronomy apps both paid and free.
I'm a visual only observer, mostly light polluted back yard observing with scopes from 60mm to 350mm. UK based.

I'd like to jump on-board with my SkyWatcher 300p on a Watch House Eq. Platform and SkyHub Digital Setting Circles basic encoder type system. I recently modified my dob base with it and I've been holding off purchasing version 5 Pro waiting for version 6 to be released. I'm an Android power user and can extensively test your app.

I used SkEye Pro previously. I mostly do visual from my preferred dark site and slowly trying astrophoto.
    Thank you.

I also would like to beta test Skysafari 6 for Android. I've been using version 5 on a Note 5 and on Tab S2.  I had tried just about every planetarium software out there, both on Android and Windows, I like Skysafari the best.  Great product.  Am hoping the AR feature is in this version.

My name is Kynan email is kwglover420@gmail.com I have bought sky safari pro at least 3 times maybe more. I am currently running safari 5 pro! I do not see the red box on my Mobile to enter my email! I have bought the pro version 3 times I know for sure at full price and you have left me unsupported and have charged me full price for an app that you stop supporting in less than a year....luckily for you I love astronomy enough to let you take advantage of me, but this is the last time! I have paid almost $200.00 U.S. and you quit supporting your product every year and ask me to pay full price again...this is a chance to redeem yourself to me.... I would like the 6 PRO beta and could support you better if you would support me..It would be nice to get the 6.7.8.9.10.11.12..(to infinity )beta and PRO Full versions for free or for repeat customers like myself.  As a V.I.P. I would even pay the $6.99 you charge for entry level for each new Pro level you develop...I've given you enough money I've bought the PRO version everytime and you've stopped supporting me within a year and then charged me the full $59.00 when I miss the "sale"! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that you are using PRO customers to keep entry level pricing low @ $6.99 and I'm sure you make the most money off $6.99 entry level  customers... but lets just say the PRO customer might want to figure out who butters your bread the most... or lose our business for ever!!! Ok the red box finally showed up that's at least a step in the right direction, but still charging me a sale price of  $30 when I know you'll stop supporting within a year, I'm just gonna have to call you out on the B.S.  as long as you treat your top paying customers like you have us your profits will drop ....let's make a deal and I'll delete this bad review!!!

Hi, I'm a long-time user of SkySafari 5 Pro (and 4 Pro) on both iOS and Android.

Having just acquired a Motorola G4, I'm looking forward to the 'big screen' experience with the updated app.

I currently use a Celestron CPC Deluxe 800 HD on an HD wedge in my observatory, which is controlled wirelessly via a SkyPortal Wi-Fi dongle.

    Regards, Ade

    Hi SS6 Android Beta Testers!

In the email I have pointed to a community post with links to purchase SkySafari 6 Plus/Pro in Google Play.

If you can not access that community post then you still need to reply to here (so I can give your support account permissions)

We are looking forward to your feedback - just in time for the weekend :)

Again, ALL feedback regarding this beta is to be submitted in the “SkySafari | Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only)” community forum found here:

I have been using SkySafari for Android, since the very first beta version came out, before the initial public release.  I am currently runniing Sky Safari 5 on a Samsung Galaxy S7, runnging Android 8.0

I do visual observation, deep sky astronomy.  I do not use it to control my telescope.  It's called star hopping.

I'm not a programmer, but I am a pro user.

Offering my time available to help keep polishing the new app. I use ss5pro on the daily basis, on private and public starparties as well as on my own observations and photo sessions. I'm member and board member of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, helping people to get properly educated about Astronomy.

    Hi,
i'm currently using SkySafari 5 Pro (Android), for planning my Astrophotography (FOV and the likes) as well as visual observation sessions.

Hope to use it to control a telescope mount in the future, once the DIY electronics (based on and around a Raspberry Pi) are working flawlessly.

    Thanks,

I've been using SkySafari since version 3. I've tried other software but none are as in depth or feature rich like SS. SS5 has run smooth and great and I'm looking forward to seeing the new features in SS6.

Newish, have run SkyPortal for Celestron 8SE and SSPro5. Mostly just use hand controller though with this as sky map for Star Parties with public.
