Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only) - Read EVERYTHING To Participate!

Invitation To Android Users:

Everyone here in the Community Forums (with an Android device) is invited to participate in the beta-testing cycle :)

Your beta-testing feedback, whatever you can contribute, will be invaluable to the success of SkySafari 6 for Android!

IMPORTANT: Beta Test User Requirements:

  • Email requirements: Users need a Google Account (@gmail.com) or a G Suite account to join in the beta test (see below).
  • Support Account requirements: Users must have Simulation Curriculum Support Account and must reply to this post; i.e. you are logged in to this website (see below).

How To Apply - 2 Parts:

    1. You must enter your @Gmail or G Suite email address (the one you use to login to Google Play to buy/download apps for your Android device) into the red bar on the bottom of this webpage.  Note, the red bar can be hidden if you have any kind of ad-blocking plugin installed.
    2. Please also reply to this post (in a comment below) if you can help us at this time.  Please outline your experience with SkySafari, including what versions of SkySafari you have run previously, what telescopes you are controlling, what kind of astronomy you are involved in, if you are a power user, etc.

Failing to follow the 2 step application process above will exclude you from the beta testing cycle.

When Accepted To Beta Test:

Purchasing The Beta: When you are accepted, you will be notified via an email (sent to your @Gmail/G Suite email address) that you are able to purchase the SS6 Android beta app from Google Play.

Accessing The SS6 Android Beta Testing Forum: When you are accepted you will see and have access to the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  The SS6 Beta Testing forum is hidden until you are accepted.

Please note, not all applicants will be immediately included in the beta-testing.  So, if you apply and do not hear back please be patient.

*** If accepted to the SS6 beta-testing forum please do NOT report bug/issues on this post.  See below for workflow ***

SS6 Android Beta Must Be Purchased:

You must purchase the beta app in order to participate in the beta testing process.  Both the beta for SS6 Plus and SS6 Pro are discounted 50% OFF.  This is the same discounted price that the apps will sell for during the first month promotion of the official public release.

You will be purchasing SkySafari 6 for Android in advance so that you can help test the features, identify and crush the bugs, and to ultimately refine and optimize the app for official public release (ETA end of August).

When SS6 for Android receives its official public release you will NOT be required to pay for the app again.

If we had a choice about it we would run the SS6 Android beta testing without having to make anyone pay upfront.  However -  given we must use the Google Play development environment we have no choice in this matter.  So, please accept that these are the parameters under which we must proceed at this time, and trust that through the beta-testing process we will, all together, improve the app such that the price paid now will be worth what will eventually become the refined and optimized end result.  If you have purchased SkySafari previously then you already know the standard to which we will hold this official public release.

The Process:

As you find bugs/issues in SkySafari 6 please first review the current discussions in this beta-testing forum (which is hidden until you are invited).  If your bug/issue has already been identified please comment on the existing post.  If your bug/issue has not been identified please create a NEW post in the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.

For clarity regarding this bug reporting process please see the Example Bug Report (hidden until you are officially invited)

Please do not submit tickets with bugs/issues.

How To Follow The SS6 Beta Forum:

As part of your participation we would appreciate that you follow the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  Following a forum means you will receive email updates when anyone creates a NEW post or comments/replies to one of the existing posts. This is important for two reasons.

  1. Following the forum ensures you receive email updates regarding all admin communications to the beta testers.  If admins make a post asking for assistance you will get an email update with that post.
  2. Following is also very important so that you have an on-going status report regarding bugs/issues identified, confirmed, requiring further testing, or have been resolved, etc.  This will help you stay on top of the overall process, and ensure you are not duplicating efforts where issues are already known and resolved.

To FOLLOW the SkySafari 6 Beta Testing community forum please see here.  Note, you must have been invited first, and have access to the forum before you can follow it.

Replying to Email Updates:

When you follow the SS6 Beta Testing forum you will receive email updates regarding new posts (and comments, if opted for).  Please do not reply to email updates using the "Reply" function.  Please first use the "View the comment" link to open the community forum post, then reply to the post.

This point is crucially important - so please understand the image below (this an example of an SS6 Beta Testing email update as seen using my web browser Yahoo email account).

If you use the email update "Reply" function your reply will not be added to the community forum discussion.

I posted in the test forum and entered my address in the "red bar," but I'm still getting the message from Google Play that I'm, "either not a member or the app hasn't been released."  I have a G Suite address.  Thank you for your help.

I got started on the Celestron SkyPortal app and upgraded to the SkySafari 5 Pro on Android within the last year.
I'm an Intermediate astrophotographer with about 4 years experience. I use a Celestron EdgeHD 8" on the AdvanceVX mount, an Asi120mm camera for guiding, and a Asi183mc with a ZWO filter wheel for imaging.

I love v5 and am interested in helping. I use it to control a 16inch Orion and an 8inch Meade. I also teach in the field and suggest that students use this software.

I use SS5 pro to control my meade lxd75 SN10 with the meade wifi adapter. With my samsung 9+ it is a breeze to do. Still in my first year of the hobby and it's more fun every clear night. I have been moving toward EEA and seeing color from the night sky is amazing. Without the aid of SS5 I would never be able to find the wonders I have seen.

I am currently running SS5P on several Android phones (Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S7) and tablets (Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1, Galaxy Note 8) as well as SS6P on an iPad and iPad mini 4. Standardizing all my devices is of great interest to me. Beta testing SS6P for Android would be a way to help make that happen.

My telescope gear is a Losmandy GM8 with Astro Devices DSC set up in a push to configuration. Optical tubes consist of a Celestron Edge HD8 and William Optics GT71 with field flattener. Imaging equipment is a QHY5III178 and a Canon 6D. I am using Sharp Cap 3 and PHD 2 for deep sky and lunar imaging.

Count me in for Sky Safari 6 Pro testing. I currently use Sky Safari 5 Pro on a Samsung Tab S tablet (running Android 6), and a Nokia 6.1 phone (currently running Android 8.1, soon to get the Android 9 update).

I would consider myself to be a moderately advanced user - I use it regularly, and know most of the features. I use it to control a Celestron NexStar 4 SE, and occasionally, a Meade LX90.

    Hi SS6 Android Beta Testers!

I emailed everyone who has submitted a @Gmail.com/G Suite email address up until this time now.

In the email I have pointed to a community post with links to purchase SkySafari 6 Plus/Pro in Google Play.

If you can not access that community post then you still need to reply to here (so I can give your support account permissions)

We are looking forward to your feedback - just in time for the weekend :)

Again, ALL feedback regarding this beta is to be submitted in the “SkySafari | Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only)” community forum found here:

    https://simcur.com/ss6-android-beta

    Thanks!

I would be more than happy to become a beta tester!  I have used sky safari 4, 4 plus, and now 5 pro.  I use it to control a meade lx90 10 inch, with wifi using stella wifi adapter from meade.  I also have a Bluetooth connection capability but prefer the faster connect wifi.  I have used skysafari 5 pro the most to control my telescope, but have also used meades stella access app which I know is just the basic skysafari app.  I prefer to use my samsung galaxy s6 for the app but sometime I use my galaxy tab 4.   The handbox  on my scope is the meade audiostar.

Unfortunately,  I couldn't find a red box to input my email, so I hope postin this is adequate.

    Thanks,

    Cal odom

I'd like to help with the Beta test.

I have SkySafari 5 Pro on a Google Pixel 2XL and on my antique Nexus 7 (2017) tablet.  It is the tablet that I use to control the telescope either with a bluetooth link or a Wifi link (I have both wireless interface devices).

I also have SkySafari 6 Plus on my iPhone.

SkySafari is primarily what I use to plan my observing sessions.  I use it create observation lists for use later when I'm outside with the equipment.  I also have a premium subscription for LiveSky.  I intend to use LiveSky mostly to create and edit observation lists for use with SkySafari on my mobile devices.

The telescope is a SkyWatcher 10" Dob with Goto and tracking.

The Nexus 7 has been "ROM'ed" -- thanks to the XDA developers forums community --- to a later version of Android than with which it shipped.

I am a power user.  I am an embedded software engineer who also likes to tinker with these things in his spare time.

Mars' opposition and lucky imaging have been taking up most of my astronomy time lately, but my astronomy interests largely revolve around deep space objects and electronically assisted astronomy.

The  "red bar on the bottom of this webpage" was missing, but popped up after completing this reply.

I began using the Pro version at release 3. I also participated in the beta testing of 5+ despite being a 4 Pro user as well. Aside from personal use I use the tool in showing the sky and the information available in public observing at events and a well known University Observatory.
As an Astro-Physics mount owner of multiple mounts, I am looking forward to testing new Park in Park 3 and other positions than currently available. Resume from last and Resume from Park will also be used regularly as a portable mount user vs a permanent observatory. Thank you for your consideration.

I am available to help beta test immediately.  After being exposed to SS4 Plus, I have become hooked.  I am relatively new to Android astronomy apps.  I am migrating from Mac laptop apps to more portable platforms. I have been using SS4 Plus for about a year before getting  SS5 Pro a year ago.  I am running SS5 Pro have a Kyocera DuraForce phone with Android 7.1.2 and a Proscan tablet with Android 4.4.  I have been a casual observer and astrophotographer for over 25 years alternating between deep sky and planetary observation.  I use a 6 inch f/9.5 Newtonian reflector for most of my work.  I do not use SS5 for telescope control, only for planning observing sessions and also casual celestial navigation.
