Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only) - Read EVERYTHING To Participate!

Invitation To Android Users:

Everyone here in the Community Forums (with an Android device) is invited to participate in the beta-testing cycle :)

Your beta-testing feedback, whatever you can contribute, will be invaluable to the success of SkySafari 6 for Android!

IMPORTANT: Beta Test User Requirements:

  • Email requirements: Users need a Google Account ( or a G Suite account to join in the beta test (see below).
  • Support Account requirements: Users must have Simulation Curriculum Support Account and must reply to this post; i.e. you are logged in to this website (see below).

How To Apply - 2 Parts:

    1. You must enter your @Gmail or G Suite email address (the one you use to login to Google Play to buy/download apps for your Android device) into the red bar on the bottom of this webpage.  Note, the red bar can be hidden if you have any kind of ad-blocking plugin installed.
    2. Please also reply to this post (in a comment below) if you can help us at this time.  Please outline your experience with SkySafari, including what versions of SkySafari you have run previously, what telescopes you are controlling, what kind of astronomy you are involved in, if you are a power user, etc.

Failing to follow the 2 step application process above will exclude you from the beta testing cycle.

When Accepted To Beta Test:

Purchasing The Beta: When you are accepted, you will be notified via an email (sent to your @Gmail/G Suite email address) that you are able to purchase the SS6 Android beta app from Google Play.

Accessing The SS6 Android Beta Testing Forum: When you are accepted you will see and have access to the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  The SS6 Beta Testing forum is hidden until you are accepted.

Please note, not all applicants will be immediately included in the beta-testing.  So, if you apply and do not hear back please be patient.

*** If accepted to the SS6 beta-testing forum please do NOT report bug/issues on this post.  See below for workflow ***

SS6 Android Beta Must Be Purchased:

You must purchase the beta app in order to participate in the beta testing process.  Both the beta for SS6 Plus and SS6 Pro are discounted 50% OFF.  This is the same discounted price that the apps will sell for during the first month promotion of the official public release.

You will be purchasing SkySafari 6 for Android in advance so that you can help test the features, identify and crush the bugs, and to ultimately refine and optimize the app for official public release (ETA end of August).

When SS6 for Android receives its official public release you will NOT be required to pay for the app again.

If we had a choice about it we would run the SS6 Android beta testing without having to make anyone pay upfront.  However -  given we must use the Google Play development environment we have no choice in this matter.  So, please accept that these are the parameters under which we must proceed at this time, and trust that through the beta-testing process we will, all together, improve the app such that the price paid now will be worth what will eventually become the refined and optimized end result.  If you have purchased SkySafari previously then you already know the standard to which we will hold this official public release.

The Process:

As you find bugs/issues in SkySafari 6 please first review the current discussions in this beta-testing forum (which is hidden until you are invited).  If your bug/issue has already been identified please comment on the existing post.  If your bug/issue has not been identified please create a NEW post in the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.

For clarity regarding this bug reporting process please see the Example Bug Report (hidden until you are officially invited)

Please do not submit tickets with bugs/issues.

How To Follow The SS6 Beta Forum:

As part of your participation we would appreciate that you follow the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  Following a forum means you will receive email updates when anyone creates a NEW post or comments/replies to one of the existing posts. This is important for two reasons.

  1. Following the forum ensures you receive email updates regarding all admin communications to the beta testers.  If admins make a post asking for assistance you will get an email update with that post.
  2. Following is also very important so that you have an on-going status report regarding bugs/issues identified, confirmed, requiring further testing, or have been resolved, etc.  This will help you stay on top of the overall process, and ensure you are not duplicating efforts where issues are already known and resolved.

To FOLLOW the SkySafari 6 Beta Testing community forum please see here.  Note, you must have been invited first, and have access to the forum before you can follow it.

Replying to Email Updates:

When you follow the SS6 Beta Testing forum you will receive email updates regarding new posts (and comments, if opted for).  Please do not reply to email updates using the "Reply" function.  Please first use the "View the comment" link to open the community forum post, then reply to the post.

This point is crucially important - so please understand the image below (this an example of an SS6 Beta Testing email update as seen using my web browser Yahoo email account).

If you use the email update "Reply" function your reply will not be added to the community forum discussion.

Hi I would love to join the beta program. I use Sky Safari 5 plus at this time on both my phone Samsung Galaxy S8 and my iPad. I would love to make suggestions if I see any that it could use. Hi SS6 Android Beta Testers!

I emailed everyone who has submitted a Suite email address up until this time now.

In the email I have pointed to a community post with links to purchase SkySafari 6 Plus/Pro in Google Play.

If you can not access that community post then you still need to reply to here (so I can give your support account permissions)

We are looking forward to your feedback - just in time for the weekend :)

Again, ALL feedback regarding this beta is to be submitted in the “SkySafari | Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only)” community forum found here:

Hi I would like to participate in the pro version of Sky safari6 as I have been using pro versions of 3,4 and 5. I use the app constantly to control my Celestron and Skywatcher telescopes over WiFi using a Nexus-S adapter by Astro Developments. At the time the Skyfi adapter would only operate using apple devices.

I have reported several bugs over the years to Bill who has managed to iron them out.

I am an active member of Mid kent astronomical society and I have promoted Sky safari within our group over several years.

    Best wishes Arthur

    Hi There ,

    I would like to help.

I have Sky Safari 4 and 5 pro on my phone and Galaxy tab now. I use them to control an LX200GPS and an ETX125 via bluetooth. I also beta tested Starry Night and met you at NEAF to discuss. I've done extensive work in Android and would be happy to put the new program through its paces. I have been waiting for the Android version and welcome the chance to test it out.

I would like to join the beta. I have had SS Pro for the past two versions and use it with my 10" Intelliscope. I have also been using LiveSky for a little while and would like to test the integrated features with that. I have been an active beta tester on many other apps (including Waze and others.) I am a member of the Richmond Astronomical Society.

Hello, I've used Sky Safari since 2011. I started on iOS (the rebranded Orion Starseek, actually) and although I still use Pro V6 on iPad, my telescope setup for observing uses Sky Safari Pro V5 on Android. My observing setup is a 20" f/3.3 New Moon Telescope Dob fitted with ServoCAT and Nexus DSC. The tablet is a Galaxy Tab S2 V7.1.1 Sky Safari controls all goto, tracking and slewing. I've enjoyed exploring V6 on iOS and look forward to seeing how the features translate to the Android version. I am also a premium subscriber to LiveSky. Please consider me as a Beta tester for Android V6 Pro.

Would love to join the beta test! I'm an astronomy grad student, and I use SkySarari extensively (SS5 Pro), mostly for star-hopping and seeing what will be in the sky on a given night. Haven't gotten around to trying out the telescope control features yet.

    I'll give it a shot.

I've used SS Pro since before there was an Android version and have beta tested every version since. Scope is an Orion XT-10G with a custom Pi interface since the SkyFi was getting long in the teeth.

I really would like to participate
in the beta trial. I am using V5 pro on a daily bases and have it connected to my Ioptron CEM25 mount. It is the best replacement for the handcontroller. I am curious how V6 can help me plan my deep sky imaging sessions. Next week I will travel from the Netherlands to France to try out my new astrocamera. Would it no
t be nice if I could use V6? I would learn a lot about the new features and give feedback in my experience!

I am interested in being part of the beta. I currently run SkySafari 5 Pro on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2. I use this to control my Celestron CGE mount via a Celestron SkyProtal wifi adapter. I use the mount with several telescopes (Celestron C10-N, C6-N and Orion ST120) for both visual astronomy and astrophotography. I also use the SkySafari app to show people where things are in the sky.

Using SkySafari 5 Pro on a Samsung phone, Lenovo tablet, Amazon Fire tablet to control a Celestron AVX and Orion SkyQuest mounts via bluetooth and wifi.  Have used version 4 in the past.  Use it for personal viewing and for outreach.

Note to others, the "red bar" shows up AFTER posting your comment :)

I would like to be considered for the beta test for version 6 on android. I currently use version 5 and am an experienced user. I control a celestron 1100 edge hd on a celestron CGX-L mount. The primary use of the software is outreach with some planning for astrophotography.

I am a power user since SS 2, using SS 4 Pro and SS 5 Pro on 3 telescopes: Obsession 18UC, Argo Navis; Skywatcher AZ-EQ 6 Pro, SynScan  WiFi, newton 14" and  refractor 80mm; Skywatcher EQ 8 with RC 14" and refractor 100mm. Also doing astro imaging with Atik Horizon. I any case I will use the SS 6 with my equipment once available. So multiple settings and uses under testconditions.

Hi, I am really waiting on the version 6 since it has been announced, mainly for all the sync features and the LiveSky integration (planning a list at home with the confort of the computer is the feature I want).

I am currently using the version 5 Pro as soon as I use my own telescope or when showing the sky objects to visitors at one of the two observatories I am member of so, yeah, I want to be part of the beta :)

    Thanks for your work.
