Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only) - Read EVERYTHING To Participate!

Invitation To Android Users:

Everyone here in the Community Forums (with an Android device) is invited to participate in the beta-testing cycle :)

Your beta-testing feedback, whatever you can contribute, will be invaluable to the success of SkySafari 6 for Android!

IMPORTANT: Beta Test User Requirements:

  • Email requirements: Users need a Google Account (@gmail.com) or a G Suite account to join in the beta test (see below).
  • Support Account requirements: Users must have Simulation Curriculum Support Account and must reply to this post; i.e. you are logged in to this website (see below).

How To Apply - 2 Parts:

    1. You must enter your @Gmail or G Suite email address (the one you use to login to Google Play to buy/download apps for your Android device) into the red bar on the bottom of this webpage.  Note, the red bar can be hidden if you have any kind of ad-blocking plugin installed.
    2. Please also reply to this post (in a comment below) if you can help us at this time.  Please outline your experience with SkySafari, including what versions of SkySafari you have run previously, what telescopes you are controlling, what kind of astronomy you are involved in, if you are a power user, etc.

Failing to follow the 2 step application process above will exclude you from the beta testing cycle.

When Accepted To Beta Test:

Purchasing The Beta: When you are accepted, you will be notified via an email (sent to your @Gmail/G Suite email address) that you are able to purchase the SS6 Android beta app from Google Play.

Accessing The SS6 Android Beta Testing Forum: When you are accepted you will see and have access to the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  The SS6 Beta Testing forum is hidden until you are accepted.

Please note, not all applicants will be immediately included in the beta-testing.  So, if you apply and do not hear back please be patient.

*** If accepted to the SS6 beta-testing forum please do NOT report bug/issues on this post.  See below for workflow ***

SS6 Android Beta Must Be Purchased:

You must purchase the beta app in order to participate in the beta testing process.  Both the beta for SS6 Plus and SS6 Pro are discounted 50% OFF.  This is the same discounted price that the apps will sell for during the first month promotion of the official public release.

You will be purchasing SkySafari 6 for Android in advance so that you can help test the features, identify and crush the bugs, and to ultimately refine and optimize the app for official public release (ETA end of August).

When SS6 for Android receives its official public release you will NOT be required to pay for the app again.

If we had a choice about it we would run the SS6 Android beta testing without having to make anyone pay upfront.  However -  given we must use the Google Play development environment we have no choice in this matter.  So, please accept that these are the parameters under which we must proceed at this time, and trust that through the beta-testing process we will, all together, improve the app such that the price paid now will be worth what will eventually become the refined and optimized end result.  If you have purchased SkySafari previously then you already know the standard to which we will hold this official public release.

The Process:

As you find bugs/issues in SkySafari 6 please first review the current discussions in this beta-testing forum (which is hidden until you are invited).  If your bug/issue has already been identified please comment on the existing post.  If your bug/issue has not been identified please create a NEW post in the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.

For clarity regarding this bug reporting process please see the Example Bug Report (hidden until you are officially invited)

Please do not submit tickets with bugs/issues.

How To Follow The SS6 Beta Forum:

As part of your participation we would appreciate that you follow the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  Following a forum means you will receive email updates when anyone creates a NEW post or comments/replies to one of the existing posts. This is important for two reasons.

  1. Following the forum ensures you receive email updates regarding all admin communications to the beta testers.  If admins make a post asking for assistance you will get an email update with that post.
  2. Following is also very important so that you have an on-going status report regarding bugs/issues identified, confirmed, requiring further testing, or have been resolved, etc.  This will help you stay on top of the overall process, and ensure you are not duplicating efforts where issues are already known and resolved.

To FOLLOW the SkySafari 6 Beta Testing community forum please see here.  Note, you must have been invited first, and have access to the forum before you can follow it.

Replying to Email Updates:

When you follow the SS6 Beta Testing forum you will receive email updates regarding new posts (and comments, if opted for).  Please do not reply to email updates using the "Reply" function.  Please first use the "View the comment" link to open the community forum post, then reply to the post.

This point is crucially important - so please understand the image below (this an example of an SS6 Beta Testing email update as seen using my web browser Yahoo email account).

If you use the email update "Reply" function your reply will not be added to the community forum discussion.

    Hi SS6 Android Beta Testers!

We would like to release SkySafari 6 for Android officially at the end of August - that gives us 7 DAYS for further testing!  So, please give us your best efforts over this weekend, and the final week ahead!

I emailed everyone who has submitted a @Gmail.com/G Suite email address up until this time now.

In the email I have pointed to a community post with links to purchase SkySafari 6 Plus/Pro in Google Play.

If you can not access that community post then you still need to reply to here (so I can give your support account permissions)

We are looking forward to your feedback - just in time for the weekend :)

Again, ALL feedback regarding this beta is to be submitted in the “SkySafari | Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only)” community forum found here:

    https://simcur.com/ss6-android-beta

    Thanks!

I use SkySafari 5 Pro regularly on a Samsung S7 Edge, using it to control a Skywatcher AZ-EQ6 that's usually carrying an Orion Optics 12" newt and i also use it to do most of the planning for my observations

We just released the 6.0.0.17 beta

The big feature of this release is that we have the in-app purchases working (or at least we think so).  Here are the in-app purchases and their prices.  We have made them all half-price for the beta.  The prices are in US dollars.

    Plus

    • HR-Diagram $1.49
    • Galaxy View $1.99

    Pro

    • HR-Diagram $1.49
    • PGC Extension Catalog $2.49
    • UCAC5 Star Extension Catalog $4.99

You can read more about this at our skysafariastronomy.com website.

You can see the available in-app purchases by going to Settings > In-App Purchases.  Tap the price to purchase.  Note that the extension catalogs require an extra download (which is automatic). Make sure you have space on your internal SD card (same place the app gets installed).

    Other things that were fixed.

    *** Fixed in 6.0.0.17 ***
    - In-app purchases are implemented
    - Fixed bug where setting a Site's properties by searching in the list of named locations didn't work
    - Fixed spurious "Can't Get Location..." message that could happen when fist running the app.
    - Fixed bug where setting the observing list of an observation wasn't correctly filtering the observing lists.
    - Fixed bug where the built-in equipment could occasionally display 0 for some of their properties
    - If a highlighted list is deleted, make sure we unhighlight it.
    - Fixed bug where you couldn't scroll the equipment view on small screens.
    - Fixed bug finding the most recent session when creating a new observation.

The TODO list is getting pretty small.

Last week to submit your bug reports!

We should be able to ship early next week.

Thanks again for your massive efforts testing the beta!

I do feel disappointed that a feature included in the beta version is now a premium feature unless the paid version is better.

    Art & Hugo,

Are you running Plus or Pro?  If you go to the Settings > In-App Purchases screen, does it say it has been purchased?  Yet you don't find the H-R Diagram settings entry at the bottom of the Display Options section of the settings?

The H-R Diagram has alway been an in-app purchase on iOS.  I did initially leave it visible in the beta so I could get some feedback on it before I got all the in-app purchase code going.  Sorry if this mislead you.

First I've heard of in app purchases in Sky Safari. I, too, have been wondering where the feature went and just saw in app purchases for the first time in Settings. It's the very last line on Settings if no one else has seen it. Since we don't have iOS, how were we to even know this was something we had to buy let alone that there is an in app purchases feature. Didn't see that in the version 5 Pro. Was it in Sky Safari for Android all along?

When SS6 is announced for sale, we will make sure people are aware of the in-app purchases.

I did announce their existence in the "What's New for 6.0.0.17.  If you are reading those you would know about it.

No, SS5 didn't have in-app purchases (except for Orbit mode on the basic version).  This is new in SS6.

Also, please don't post general bug reports or questions in this thread that announces the beta.  Start a new thread.  It helps us keep track of things.

    Hi,

I'm a 5 Plus user on Android 5 still and it may be useful for me to beta test the new app on this older version of Android.

I mainly use the app to plan my imaging or observing sessions as I control my equipment from a PC using Cartes du Ciel, EQMOD and SGP though I'd be keen to use the Web-based version of SS using plans prepared on the Android app.

    Thanks
    Peter

    Hello SkySafari-Team,
I would like to participate in the beta test.
My equipment is a Meade LX90 8 "and a Celestron NexStar.
Both devices are controlled via Bluetooth and SkySafari (currently version 5 Pro).
SkySafari runs on my Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 "(Android 7) as well as on a Galaxy S7 edge (Android 8).
I am an avid amateur astronomer. I use SkySafari since version 4 to plan my observation night and to control the telescope.

I would be happy to support the development of the product with my experience.

    Hi Keiron,

As reported to Bill under a separate thread, last weekend I used 6.0.0.22 connected to a StarSense Accessory-equipped Celestron CPC Deluxe 800 HD via a SkyPortal Wi-Fi module.

I was able to successfully perform StarSense manual alignments (since my view is too obscured to use StarSense AutoAlign) on a wedge, add extra alignment points, calibrate centre, etc. without issue.

    Regards,

    Ade

[App Update!] SkySafari 6.0.4.33 Released To Beta

We have just pushed a new version of Plus & Pro to our beta group.

The beta is version 6.0.4.33.  Please check for an app update.  If you don't find an app update please consider deleting and reinstalling your SS6 Plus/Pro app via Google Play.  That will (should) get you the latest (beta) version.

The SkySafari Beta Testing community forum is unlocked and available again for posting reports and discussing issues.

Please post any issues regarding the updating of the app in the community forum above as well.

    Here is what has changed:

    - Updated star database in Plus & Pro.
    - The UCAC5 extension database now uses GAIA DR2 data.
    - SkyWatcher mounts now have the Set Time & Location ability and improved GoTo accuracy.
    - Fixed a few LiveSky database issues that could cause some data to not be found.
    - Redesigned the Object Info panel so you can toggle between the Data & Description.
    - Fixed problem where images for two planetary nebulae where not displayed.
    - Fixed bug where some built-in lists were empty when first displayed.

The change to using GAIA DR2 data is fairly major.  For those Pro users that bought the UCAC5 extension database, it should now be called GAIA extension database.  When you first run the app, it will delete the old extension datafile.  It will then display a message saying the data needs updating and to go to Settings > In-App Purchase to download the new data.  Please let us know if you have any issues with this.

The new data should fix the problem some have reported with spurious double stars.  This was caused by having the same star (with slightly different coordinates) in the Tycho and GAIA databases.  The New DR2 release of GAI has cross references to the Tycho data so we can eliminate the duplicates.

    Thanks!

Hi SkySafari 6 Android Beta Testers!

We are now beta testing version 6.2.0.37!

Please check for an app update (if you don't want to be included in this beta please do not apply the update).

What's New in SkySafari 6.2.0.37 & What We Need Tested!

    • Incorporated Wolfgang Steinicke's 2019 updates to his NGC/IC database.
    • Added better support for having multiple observations of an object in an observing list.
    • In observing lists, you can now chose to show all objects, only observed objects, or only unobserved objects.
    • When attaching an observation to an observing list, we now show two sections of lists. Those lists that already contain the object and those that don't.
    • Added a Quasar type to the Planner for searches.
    • In Pro, added the ability to toggle the extension databases between Active and Inactive states.
    • For equatorial Celestron Wi-Fi mounts, you now are given the option of doing an All-Star Polar Alignment (ASPA) after a star alignment.
    • Fixed a problem with StarSense alignment when using Celestron Wi-Fi.
    • Fixed a few issues with the display or editing of times in observations and sessions.
    • Improved performance syncing data with LiveSky.
    • Various other performance and stability changes.

Thank you for any feedback you can provide!

Again, please do not reply here with any issues regarding the beta or the app - instead create a NEW post in the community forum linked above.

The HR Diagram On/Off switch is a big improvement. I like how its implem9, Keiron. The only thing easier would have been to have it toggle on the Selection menu. Once its purchased and enabled, settings chosen under Settings then an HR Diagram enable or disable on the Session menu would have made it easier. Just having it enabled via Settings is fine. It works. I enabled a grid I hadn't used before and zoomed in and out easily watching stars slip out and back in the FOV. Thanks. Comments on enabling under Selection menu?
Sorry don't have any Celestron equipment anymore just Astro-Physics but will check the Observing Lists improvements and changes as well.

It's right under the Settings menu. You'll see it under Display Options. Just click the H-R Diagram title and 4 options show up. The first one is display H-R Diagram. Uncheck that and it goes away.
