Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only) - Read EVERYTHING To Participate!

Invitation To Android Users:

Everyone here in the Community Forums (with an Android device) is invited to participate in the beta-testing cycle :)

Your beta-testing feedback, whatever you can contribute, will be invaluable to the success of SkySafari 6 for Android!

IMPORTANT: Beta Test User Requirements:

  • Email requirements: Users need a Google Account (@gmail.com) or a G Suite account to join in the beta test (see below).
  • Support Account requirements: Users must have Simulation Curriculum Support Account and must reply to this post; i.e. you are logged in to this website (see below).

How To Apply - 2 Parts:

    1. You must enter your @Gmail or G Suite email address (the one you use to login to Google Play to buy/download apps for your Android device) into the red bar on the bottom of this webpage.  Note, the red bar can be hidden if you have any kind of ad-blocking plugin installed.
    2. Please also reply to this post (in a comment below) if you can help us at this time.  Please outline your experience with SkySafari, including what versions of SkySafari you have run previously, what telescopes you are controlling, what kind of astronomy you are involved in, if you are a power user, etc.

Failing to follow the 2 step application process above will exclude you from the beta testing cycle.

When Accepted To Beta Test:

Purchasing The Beta: When you are accepted, you will be notified via an email (sent to your @Gmail/G Suite email address) that you are able to purchase the SS6 Android beta app from Google Play.

Accessing The SS6 Android Beta Testing Forum: When you are accepted you will see and have access to the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  The SS6 Beta Testing forum is hidden until you are accepted.

Please note, not all applicants will be immediately included in the beta-testing.  So, if you apply and do not hear back please be patient.

*** If accepted to the SS6 beta-testing forum please do NOT report bug/issues on this post.  See below for workflow ***

SS6 Android Beta Must Be Purchased:

You must purchase the beta app in order to participate in the beta testing process.  Both the beta for SS6 Plus and SS6 Pro are discounted 50% OFF.  This is the same discounted price that the apps will sell for during the first month promotion of the official public release.

You will be purchasing SkySafari 6 for Android in advance so that you can help test the features, identify and crush the bugs, and to ultimately refine and optimize the app for official public release (ETA end of August).

When SS6 for Android receives its official public release you will NOT be required to pay for the app again.

If we had a choice about it we would run the SS6 Android beta testing without having to make anyone pay upfront.  However -  given we must use the Google Play development environment we have no choice in this matter.  So, please accept that these are the parameters under which we must proceed at this time, and trust that through the beta-testing process we will, all together, improve the app such that the price paid now will be worth what will eventually become the refined and optimized end result.  If you have purchased SkySafari previously then you already know the standard to which we will hold this official public release.

The Process:

As you find bugs/issues in SkySafari 6 please first review the current discussions in this beta-testing forum (which is hidden until you are invited).  If your bug/issue has already been identified please comment on the existing post.  If your bug/issue has not been identified please create a NEW post in the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.

For clarity regarding this bug reporting process please see the Example Bug Report (hidden until you are officially invited)

Please do not submit tickets with bugs/issues.

How To Follow The SS6 Beta Forum:

As part of your participation we would appreciate that you follow the SS6 Android Beta Testing forum.  Following a forum means you will receive email updates when anyone creates a NEW post or comments/replies to one of the existing posts. This is important for two reasons.

  1. Following the forum ensures you receive email updates regarding all admin communications to the beta testers.  If admins make a post asking for assistance you will get an email update with that post.
  2. Following is also very important so that you have an on-going status report regarding bugs/issues identified, confirmed, requiring further testing, or have been resolved, etc.  This will help you stay on top of the overall process, and ensure you are not duplicating efforts where issues are already known and resolved.

To FOLLOW the SkySafari 6 Beta Testing community forum please see here.  Note, you must have been invited first, and have access to the forum before you can follow it.

Replying to Email Updates:

When you follow the SS6 Beta Testing forum you will receive email updates regarding new posts (and comments, if opted for).  Please do not reply to email updates using the "Reply" function.  Please first use the "View the comment" link to open the community forum post, then reply to the post.

This point is crucially important - so please understand the image below (this an example of an SS6 Beta Testing email update as seen using my web browser Yahoo email account).

If you use the email update "Reply" function your reply will not be added to the community forum discussion.

My daughter and I can help test the Android version.  We have used SkySafari 5 and were iOS tester for Sky Safari 6.  We have a Pro Series Telescope.  Thank you! :)

Currently being wowed by v5. I need to get my oar in over chart label sizes so this seems a good idea...  A beginner in astronomy and related skills so I think I'll definitely help spotting inconsistencies and unfriendly interface glitches. Very impressed with your current product.

I use this app on my Samsung Galaxy S8 note. I have previously used the android version of pro 4 and pro 5. I have no experience controlling a telescope with it.

I use SkySafari 5 Pro for Android (and recommend it to others in astronomy and astrophotography discord servers) on a daily basis.
As I am primarily into astrophotography instead of visual astronomy I only use the app for planning my sessions. The features for framing objects based on equipment has been extremely valuable to me. I wish these features allowed better interactivity to switch gear, fovs and rotation of camera without resorting to the menu system but have learned to adapt quickly to where menu items are.
Great product! I look forward to seeing what 6 has to offer!

I'd love to help.  I've been using SS since version 4 and consider myself a power user in ss5 pro.  The only feature I don't use is telescope control, so I'l be able to help with everything else.  I mostly do dark sky observing of faint-ish objects and use the software to plan and log all of my observations, as well as using it at the scope to compare star fields. Using a Samsung Galaxy S8 and a Samsung Note Tab 10.1 tablet.

I currently use SkySafari Pro 5 on a OnePlus 6 (stock) to control a Skywatcher NEQ6 via a Bluetooth dongle and Virtuoso App interface.  I have a variety of Android phones running Lineage OS 15 (Oneplus One, Samsung Galaxy Note II) to test on rooted & custom ROMs too.  I do mostly visual observing, with some planetary and DSO work.  I maintain observing lists of Messiers, Caldwells and Herschels I have observed, observing lists for nightly viewing, and also custom lists for public star parties.  Thanks for letting me apply.

I use pro 5 on a Samsung tablet.  I've  used numerous versions of Sky Safari.  I use it mainly for determining astrophoto targets (field of view, orientation, transit time...).  I also use Sky Safari in outreach programs.  I use it ocassionally to control my telescope on a Mess mount.  Thanks.

I use Sky Safari 5, has been a great help to me.

I use it in a city to help me find what I am able to see. I do not use the telescope control feature.

    I am also a beginner.

    Thanks

Edit: I do not see the red box  for the gmail address.

Edit 2: Found the red box, does not seem to show properly on chromebook, or chrome on an android phone.

Working with SkySafari (Android) for years. My first SkySafari was 1.8.5 and now SkySafari5. Using the app on a Samsung S8 and an older tablet Samsung Note 10.1 (SM-P605) and Android 7 (Resurrection Remix). And finally I plan to buy a Meade LX200 and play/test with SkySafari.

Been using Sky Safari Pro since version 3. Samsung Notes and Tabs. By day I am an observatory engineer. Electromechanical control systems and embedded programming. At night I do a lot of imaging, astro outreach and occultation science. Currently own Sky Safari 5 Plus and Pro. My primary interest is in telescope control. I mostly use my Astro-Physics 1100GTO and Mach1 mounts (CP4's) but I also own a number of Meade GOTO mounts (Autostar 497 & LX200GPS), Losmandy G-11 w. Gemini-II, iOptron Alt-Az GOTO mounts (8407 & 8405 hand controllers), a Skywatcher Synscan dob mount and some cheap Celestron alt-az GOTO mounts.

I am hoping that this version allows more control over my AP mounts (GOTO any park position, start from any park position, PEM on/off, change tracking rate, etc.) or at least maybe a pop-up window where I can manually type in mount commands and see replies. Local echo on/off. Keyboard macros would be nice too.

I would enjoy Beta Testing Sky Safari 6. I was a beta tester for the first android version and I've been using it ever since. I use it on my smart phone as well as a variety of tablets, my main tablet is a Nexus 7 2013.. I'm a star hopper and SkySafari has helped me take it to the next level. I'm looking forward to purchasing the larger, deeper data bases of stars as currently I out run the Pro database.

I have been using Sky Safari for a couple of versions, currently running v5 Pro on my HTC 10 phone (Android Oreo) buy can only run the basic v5 on my Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 (Lineage v7.1.2) because of memory limitations. I use it to keep up with what's in the sky, find information on objects at star parties, plan observing or photography sessions, running simulations ... just about everything except controlling a telescope. Its great to have all the resources that used to take up physical shelf space in my pocket, ready whenever someone has a question!

I've been patiently (ha!) waiting for v6 on Android. I've done software testing nearly 30 years, and would be pleased to help identify or confirm things needing attention, and provide STR's.  Thank you!

    Hi Keiron,

I would like to be a beta tester for Android Skysfari 6. I have been a Skysafari Pro user since at least V4 and have done beta testing for you previously, and for other astronomy suppliers. I have a Samsung Galaxy S9 phone and an older Samsung Galaxy tablet that I can test on. I do a mix of visual astronomy and astrophotography, including short exposure planetary/lunar/solar Ha, and longer exposure deep sky, some guided and some unguided. I have several Celestron Eq (AVX and CG5) and Alt/Az (8SE and SLT) mounts, Starsense auto align, Celestron wifi scope connection dongle, and a Bluetooth scope connection dongle. I have 65, 80, and 104 mm Refractors, a 6 inch Makustov-Newtonian, 90mm Mak-Cass, and C8 and C11 SCTs.  Thanks.

    Hi SS6 Android Beta Testers!

I emailed everyone who has submitted a @Gmail.com/G Suite email address.

In the email I have pointed to a community post with links to purchase SkySafari 6 Plus/Pro in Google Play.

If you can not access that community post then you still need to reply to here (so I can give your support account permissions)

We are looking forward to your feedback - just in time for the weekend :)

Again, ALL feedback regarding this beta is to be submitted in the “SkySafari | Beta Testing SkySafari 6 (Android Only)” community forum found here:

    https://simcur.com/ss6-android-beta

    Thanks!

Greetings from Germany. If possible, I would like to test Sky Safari 6 Pro. I use Version 5 and I also have Version 6 Pro on iOS. Simply the best mobile astronomy software. I will test on Samsung Galaxy S8 as well as on Samsung Tab A6 10.1 inch for Android versions.

I started with the basic version, then used the plus and finally the pro version. Do really need the pro? Well, not sure. But good to have it :-)

At that moment I do no control my (small) telescope with Sky Safari and I don't think I am a real power user. However, I use it regularly if I have time and if the sky is clear.
