SkySafari 5 Plus | Samsung S8 Crasher (Solution: Reinstall App)

I can no longer get SkySafari Plus 5 to launch on my Samsung S8. I have never had problems with it on this device previously, but I usually run SkySafari on an iPad, and use the android version only occasionally, so I do not know exactly when it stopped working.

The startup behavior is as follows : I see the splash screen for about two seconds, followed by the default initial screen of the app, with a "Rate SkySafari Plus" pop up superimposed. Immediately thereafter, the SkySafari screen disappears, and is replaced by a Samsung dialog box "SkySafari 5 Plus has stopped" and offering the option to "Close app" or "Send feedback". If I choose the "Close" option, the app continues to be shown as running until I manually shut it down. Each time I attempt to make that instance active, however, the above sequence repeats.

Phone is a samsung S8, model SM-G950U1, running Android 8.0.0, and Samsung Experience v9. 0.
I am traveling to the southern hemisphere next week and would like to be able to use the app there even when I do not have my iPad with me, if possible. Any suggestions on how I can get past this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

    Hi Michael,

    Let's try simple stuff first.

    • Reboot device.
    • Reinstall the app.

    Thanks!

    Hi, Keiron.
Thanks for the reply. I've rebooted the device several times since the problem cropped up with no change. I will try reinstalling asap, but might have to wait until I'm at home, given the size of the app. I will report as soon as I've gotten it reinstalled.

    Hi Michael,

    Do this when reinstalling.

    Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en (or similar)

    1. Uninstall the app
    2. Using a file browser, go to the top level of the SD card and rename the directory "SkySafari 5 Plus".  Don't delete this folder if you have important equipment/fovs, etc, stored in the app.  Just rename it "SkySafari 5 Plus - old"
    3. Now reinstall the app and try again.

You can actually try step 2 on its own without deleting and reinstall the app, to see if that makes a difference.

Sometimes trashing the prefs restores functionality.

    Hi, Keiron.

I was able to get shared wifi connection long enough to reinstall just now, and the app is working now. I didn't see your follow up message before I dish that, though, so it worked even without renaming the directory.

Thanks so much for the assist! And d have a great weekend.
