SS6 Pro Can't Connect Via IOGEAR Bluetooth-to-Serial adaptor (model GBC232A) With AstroPhysics 1200 Mount. (Answer: IOGEAR Is Not Officially Supported)

I'm trying to use an "IOGEAR Bluetooth to Serial adaptor  model GBC232A" .  It briefly connects to

SS6P however then reports that the mount does not respond.  SS6 is set for an Astro-Physics German Equatorial

mount.  The mount RS232 connection works as designed when connected to a PC via a USB to Serial adaptor.

    Hi Gary,

The IOGEAR Bluetooth to Serial adaptor (model GBC232A) is not officially supported.

You would do well to include a screenshot of the error message in your post here.

Also, make sure your scope is star-aligned via the hand controller, before trying to connect with SkySafari.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for responding Keiron.
I don't know how to do a screen grab from my Moto Droid Android phone.  The SSP6 error message is verbatim

"Sky Safari Pro can make a

wireless connection to the scope, but the scope is not

responding. Make sure the scope is powered on and

connected correctly. Also make sure you selected the correct scope type."

The mount is an Astro-Physics 1200, a German Equatorial type.  The serial connection works fine

when connected to my imaging PC via a USB-to-serial adaptor.  When I'm not imaging it would be convenient to be able to

use SSP6 to control the mount and not need to bring the PC out the the observatory.  I've set the IOGEAR Bluetooth-to-serial adaptor

to serial port 4. 19200 baud,  1 stop bit and no Parity bit, those being the specs defined in the Astro-Physics manual.

Sorry, I have to ask again.  Are you star-aligned via the HC before trying to connect with SkySafari?  And what ScopeType have you selected in SkySafari telescope settings?

    Thanks, Gary!

    Hi Keiron,
I have star aligned with the had controller and the result seems fairly accurate, usually centering a target within

1 arcminute or less.  I selected "Astro-Physics GTO" as the scope type and and "Equatorial GoTo (German)" as the mount type.
After reading the Astr-Physics document your recommended I've learned that it is suggested the mount be parked in the "4" position

before connecting and I've not yet tried that.  (The #4 parking position is unusual and must be pre-set manually.  I've usually parked in the #1

position ).  I'll give that a try today.

No Joy!  Same error message when using Astro-Physic's Park 4 position,  PC usb-2-serial still works OK.
I need to verify what the bluetooth-2-serial adaptor is actually outputting.  Either SSP6 is sending the wrong connect

message or the adaptor is either sending or receiving in error.

OK, there is a telescope log file you can grab in the app.  In Scope Setup -> Common Settings -> Savelog File

Please also send the log to ksmith at simcur.com

    Thanks!

Keiron, I emailed a log file to you yesterday.  If you did not receive it, I'll

try again.   Meanwhile I'm engaged in a dialog with IOGEAR support and they have

made suggestion I need to try.

Gary, Keiron, did this ever get resolved?

It seems the same problem as being discussed in another thread:

    https://support.simulationcurriculum.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360039867673-Why-Does-SkySafari-6-Plus-Send-On-Connection-To-Astro-Physics-CP3-Controller-?page=1#community_comment_360014829613

It seems that the initialization string SkySafari sends to Astro-Physics mounts with CP3 controller's may not be correct and that may be the reason the mount will not connect and SkySafari reports the failure message Gary quoted above.

    Thank you,

    Michael

I think this is an IOGEAR problem.  I was able to use the RN-270 and/or SkyBT serial to Bluetooth devices with SkySafari-5 Pro and my Mach1-GTO with CP3 successfully.  I can't remember if I've tried with SkySafari-6 Pro yet or not -- but I think I have -- and it works.  And the same with the SkyFi-III -- it works too with the CP3.

    Woody, here’s what I found:

First, I'm using a newer version of the US Converters BT-serial adapter, model UCBT232B.

Second, SkySafari’s initialization command sequence for the Astro-Physics (A-P) CP3 servo controller appears to be confusing the CP3 mount controller. I found this by using a “dumb terminal” app on my Android phone to send individual commands in the A-P command language over BT to the US Converters BT-serial adapter connected to the mount serial port; the mount responded to all commands perfectly.

There is a work around for A-P mount controllers that was identified by William Rison in this thread:

He found that selecting Meade LX200 Classic in SkySafari’s mount select menu, instead of A-P, will allow SkySafari to connect to the A-P controller. Apparently Meade mounts use a command set similar to that used by A-P controllers. However, in using this work-around during several observing sessions, I have found that there are some glitches; for example, mount slew rates are not always properly controlled.

Keiron Smith has posted in the above-linked thread that Sim Curriculum will review the A-P connect sequence in the next revision.

For reference, all the above was true running either of these two versions of SkySafari: 5 Plus v5.4.0.0 (an older superseded version) and 6 Pro v6.7.2.0 (current version).
