Why Can't SkySafari 6 Pro On Android Download DSS Images? (Answer: We're Working On It)

For any object does not possible to download DSS image.
Returned message: "Unable to download image file".
The same message returns when you press the "Redownload Image" button.

Download DSS images in older versions of SS6Pro works fine.

Confirmed DSS images won't download or open neither will Sky Week but Live Sky continues to work. This is all new since download, install and use of Apollo missions add in. Android v 9, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Sky Safari Pro 6.3.0.43.

Wrote Bill with my 6.3.0.43 log who suggested I verify my internet connection. Of c5i did and did again, cleaning memory between tests. I 1st connected to Live Sky then attempted to launch Sky Week which failed while Live Sky immediately brought up stars. Both download and re-attempt download of DSS Image failed. Tons of free memory.
Log showed nothing by the way. So what was wrong with the original link that caused a resend? The original brought me to a 1.4 GB 6 Pro Beta upgrade download. Did that 1st before buying, installing and launching the Apollo Missions add in. I have screen prints but can't find an attach screen here.

Interesting you'd be told to check your internet connection; what are the odds all four of us are having consistent bad internet connections when everything else is working?  It's obvious that 6.3.0.43 is the problem; my tablet is running an older version, works fine, my other versions of SS Pro 5 on my phone also work fine.  Hope we can get this one fixed soon, as I'm holding out on updating my tablet until these issues are corrected.

    Chris,

I told him to check the internet *before* I was aware that others were having this problem.

John told me via private email that this started after purchasing the Apollo in-app purchase.  I know Chris reported this problem before the last release.  For the rest of you, did the problem start after Apollo?

I am unable to reproduce this.  This only way I'll figure it out is if some of you send me a log file after the DSS download (or SkyWeek) fails.

This is also likely to be dependent on your Android version and possible device type.   Could you all please report that?

Send the log file to "bill at simcur dot com"

OK, I got one of the log files.  The problem is that Android appears to be cracking down on allowing http:// connections.  They want everything to be https://.  I can make the changes to the code (hopefully the SkyWeek site supports https://).

I'm curious as to why this is coming up all the sudden.  Again it is ether the latest Android release enforces this or possibly there is some setting on the Android phone that might enable/disable it.  If there is such a setting try changing it to allow cleartext http:// calls.  If there is not then you will have to wait for a new release (which should be in a couple of days).

Looks like this is Android catching up to Apple in a security matter.

Android 9 forces https.  And some workarounds if https is not an option:

Using otg-Ethernet I can download DSS images just fine via the 'object info' route ( otg ethernet also works fine with SkyWeek & Solarsystem data updates in SS5 & SS6)

However batch "Download DSS Images For List" gives me the popup message "Download DSS Images: You must be connected to the internet to download DSS images".

Is anyone else having trouble with batch observing list DSS downloads with SkySafari  6.3.2.46?

If others are not experiencing issues, then Bill, I would be very grateful if the batch DSS download module & LiveSky module are set to also 'see' otg Ethernet (e.g. eth0 ) just like SkyWeek & Solar system data downloads do.  On my android devices, I do everything from remote tablet control to updates with otg ethernet.

Also, Lis has brought up a significant point worthy of consideration regarding the change in images from SS5 = phase2_gsc2 to SS6:= phase2_gsc1

[Feature Request] Allow Option To Download Either DSS Images phase2_gsc2 Or phase2_gsc1 (SS6 Switched From Using phase2_gsc2 to phase2_gsc1) (LINK)

    Thanks! Chadwick
