How To Configure Starry Night Pro 8 On Windows 10 + SkyFi 3 (Answer: Read On!)

I am running StarryNight-8-Pro on a Win10 laptop and am trying to control a NexStar-5SE (USB) scope using a SkyFi module. The ASCOM configuration window asks for a Port # but the window will not accept any keyboard inputs.

I have the telescope aligned and the SkiFi connected to the HC with a USB cable. This is the same setup I use with SkySafari-6-Pro which works well.

I installed the ASCOM driver for Celestron from the ASCOM download page.

Is there something in addition to ASCOM that needs to be installed?

You have SkyFi or SkyFi 3?  Does your SkyFi take AA batteries or has the rechargeable battery inside?

    SkyFi-3 and rechargeable.

Is this the right place to reply?

    Almost there with SN8P.

Downloaded and installed ASCOM Platform and Celestron driver.

    Downloaded and configured VSP.

Shut down and restarted the PC.

Opened SN8: 'Telescope Setup' ; upon choosing "Connect" the screen froze and all menus, displays etc greyed out. Used Ctrl/Alt/Del to exit.

Opened "Telescope panel": small control pad appeared in upper left, large conrtrol panel also opened, both with N/S/E/W and connect buttons. Same result, grey-out            and screen freeze.

    One small step.......................

    Follow up

Interestingly, SN-7(Celestron Edition) and Carte du Ciel will connect. The direction buttons do not work in either one but there are no freezes or grey outs.

    1. How do you know the USB cable (connecting SkyFi 3 to Celestron USB hand controller port) is working?
    2. What USB port is it plugged into on the SkyFi 3?
    3. What firmware is running in SkyFi 3?  Go to 10.0.0.1 in a browser when connected to SkyFi 3.

    1. USB cable is a USB-A to USB-mini provided by Celestron w/scope. The same cable works well when I set up with SkySafari-6-Pro.

    2. Plugged into the USB-A plug on the SkyFi-3.

    3. See screen shot below.

The Google error message about the license went away.

However VSP is not stable. After restarting the PC the VSP must be recreated, its window shows "deleted".

When connected in SNP8 only the small HC panel is active and moves the scope. Everything else is non responsive. I can exit the program only by using ctrl/alt/del.

**Carte du Ciel works properly with only the small HC on-screen. Object selection and go-to works well.

This screen shot is typical of what mentioned. Only the small control panel is active. All else is non responsive.

OK, this is good info.  I think the SN8 telescope control panel is open, but hidden.  What happens if...

    1. ...you exit the small control panel?  Can you get access to SN8?
    2. ...you minimize and maximize SN8 via the dock icon?

See if you can find a way to get back to the SN8 program.  This is a Windows OS focus issue; i.e. SN8 is active and working, but stuck in the background for some reason.

Also, what is the dock icon open on the right beside SN8?  What program is that?

    Thanks!

    Here goes:

    1. No. Exiting the small control panel changes nothing. No access to SN8.

    2. Before tapping 'connect', I can minimize and maximize SNP8. While SNP8 is minimized, the large and small control panels are overlaid on the Desktop with no change in size. Also while SNP8 is minimized, the connect button works and the direction buttons on the large control panel talk to the scope moving it East and South only. Maximize SNP8 and the connection is lost, tap connect while maximized and the screen freezes up.

I don't know what dock icon on the right is. It comes on by default when SNP8 is opened.

Yes, but a bit later. I won't be home until after 6:00pm eastern time.

Tonight will not be a good time. We are in the midst of heavy electrical storm activity. We have lost power twice and the lightning is heavy.

Is there anything else I can try in the meantime?

You could try uninstalling and reinstalling.  Can't say that will really make a difference.  But, maybe.

I uninstalled and reinstalled: SNP8, ASCOM and VSP. I didn't notice any difference except that SNP8 installed much faster than the previous install.

The VSP is sometimes deleted when the laptop is shut off, but not always.

My Win10 is 64bit, does that matter?

    Another note:

    1. Select "View">'Telescope Setup'> Chart and strip menu across the top freeze. Only the buttons on the setup window remain active until 'connect' is selected, then everything freezes.

    2. Select "View">'Telescope Control'> Chart and strip menu remain active until 'connect' is selected>small control pad (Celestron) remains active, all else freezes.

The scope is aligned, and connected to the computer with the USB cable. The SkyFi is off and disconnected.

I was able to make a ISB cable connection this night.

Things were not working right but there was a connection, what is the next step?

What is the problem when making a straight USB-A (computer port) to USB-Mini (Celestron hand controller port)?

The scope is aligned and connected by USB cable at the moment.
