[Bug]* SkySafari Plus 6.5.0.1 On iOS 9.3.5 Connecting Via Celestron WiFi Gets Scope Is Not Responding Error (Answer: Use A Newer Version Of iOS)

SS App Version Number: 6.5.0.1

Using IPad 3,  iOS 9.3.5, SkySafari 6 Plus. ver 6.5.0.1
To date I have been using the software to control my Celectron Evolution 6 without any problems,
Trying to connect today 07/08/2019 software gives:
SkySafari 6 Plus can make a Wireless connection to the scope, but the scope is not responding.

Scope works fine with the 6 Plus program from an IPad 5 IOS 12.4, and IPhone6+. IOS 12.4

SkySafari 5 Plus ver 5.4.1.0 connects to the scope fine with the IPad 3

Scope set up procedure which I have used from start. Scope Type > Celestron Wi-FiMount; Type > Alt-Az.;  GoToCommunication > Direct Connect.

I switch on Scope’On IPad,  Connect the WIFI to ‘Celestron XX’ (Connection has never been a problem); Once connected I select ‘Connect and Align’ from the SkySafari program. (This is where I now get the Error message in SS6.5.0.1). .From here I usually use a 2 Star align without any problems.

I have rechecked the program settings but they were never changed.
I have reinstalled the program to the IPad3 and made the necessary telescope settings again, reset and rebooted the Ipad 3. But the scope still fails to respond.

I believe there was an update of SkySafari 6+ since I last used scope about 2 months. There have not been any Apple updates to my old IPad 3 in this time.

Any Help would be appreciated.

Roger

Roger, please also download the Celestron SkyPortal app and test whether or not you can successfully align using that app.

    Thanks!

    Hi Keiron

    Apologies for the delay

You should have the details requested now. I may well not have sent them correctly when I thought.

    Files attached to the email.

    Copy:

Ref: SS6 has stopped connecting to Scope using IPad 3.

Please find attached files as requested. I am concerned that these are not the files you are looking for and that the ‘Save Log File’ function is not turned on, in which case can you let me know how I can do this.

I tried the Sky Portal VER 3.1.0.9067,  and it connected without any problem, as did the SS 5 program.

If any help I have made all the settings in SkySafari 6, on my IPad 3 and IPad 5 exactly the same and tried to connect to the scope.

The Ipad3 still gives scope not responding

The IPad 5 connects without any problem.

I then carefully compared the Current Settings Logs from both Ipads.

The only differences I could find (apart from the objects last selected in the SkySafari program) were:

    Ipad 3 /  IPad 5

    TimeFlowIndex=2 TimeFlowIndex=4
    ScopeCETrackRAOnly=1 ScopeCETrackRAOnly=0
    ScopeCESlewLimitMax=90 ScopeCESlewLimitMax=70
    ScopeCETelescopeModel=-1

    ScopeCETelescopeModel=22

It may mean something to somebody

    Thanks

    Hi Roger,

Please look in Settings > Scope Setup > Save Log File

Save Log File - If turned on, SkySafari saves a log of its communication with the telescope on your mobile device. SkySafari creates a new log file every time you connect to the telescope. The log file records every command that SkySafari sends to the telescope, and every response from the telescope. The log file name contains the date and time you began the telescope session, for example:

    2014-01-31-12-34-56.txt

This log file can be emailed to Southern Stars for troubleshooting telescope communication problems. You can transfer the telescope communication log from your iOS  using iTunes file sharing.

    • iOS users - transfer the scope communication log to your computer with iTunes file sharing. Connect your iPhone or iPad to a computer running iTunes with a USB cable. Select your iOS device when it appears in iTunes, then find the "Apps" section. Choose SkySafari Plus or Pro from the list of apps. iTunes will then display the SkySafari Documents that can be shared with iTunes.

    Thanks!

    Hi Keiron

You should now have the correct Log File as originally requested, sent by email to you directly.

Do you wish me to email the file directly to 'Southern Stars' ?

I notice that In the SS 6+ version history, most recent update refers to 6.5.0, not 6.5.0.1 on 18th July - is this of any significance.

Previous update was only 6th May to 6.4.0, perhaps if I could roll back to try the 6.4 version it may well work, even with the bugs.

    Is this possible?

Just  wondered if there was any progress with this query.

I have not had any feedback as to whether the Log File I sent was of any help, or even correct.

I am at present using SS5+ to control my scope via my IPad3. Will this 'have to do' until the next update materialises?

    I remain pregnant with anticipation.

    Hi Keiron,

I noted the Bug stopping me from using my Ipad 3 on iOS 9.3.5, I referred to in August last year was eventually sorted with a version update

From then the Scope worked well using my Ipad 3

However there have been some more updates to SkySafari 6 since then which has apparently recreated the exact same problem.

I cannot control my Celestron Scope using SkySafari 6, ver 6.6.4.9 on my Ipad 3 running iOS 9.3.5.

    Error Message: Connection Failure

SkySafari 6 Plus can make a wireless network connection to the scope, but the scope is not responding. Make sure it is connected and powered on. Also check that your scope type is correct

SkySafari 5+ ver 5.4.1.0 works fine on Ipad3

The scope connects without issue to my Iphone 7+ running iOS 13.3.1

Are you aware of the return of this problem?

    Many Thanks

    Hi Roger,

It is not clear at this time that we can continue to support such a long tail of operating systems on iOS.  I suggest using a newer version of iOS (as you already know) to eliminate this issue.

    Thanks!

SkySafari 6+ as advertised in Apple Apps store gives the version comparability as ok for iOS version 8. As I stated I am running iOS 9.3.5

If I had known updating 6+ would have caused this bug to return I would have stopped at a working version.

I believe issues for me may have occurred at installation of ver. 6.6.0

Please can you arrange for me to access a roll back to an earlier working version of Safari6+.

    Many Thanks

    Roger

Sorry, Roger, we can not roll back SkySafari on iOS, Android or macOS.  There can only be one version available in the App Stores, and it will always be the latest version.

    Hi Keiron

Can I take it from the tone of your reply that you do not intend to do anything about removing this bug which has actually been put back into the software?

I understand that this could well limit the progress of the software development, however I have no doubt you have a SkySafari 7 in the pipeline.

I wish to emphasise again that it clearly states in the Apple Apps store the version comparability is iOS version 8. and I am running iOS 9.3.5. on my iPad

    Hi Roger,

I know what the app store says.  And, yes, SS7 will come to light in due time.

My advice, suggesting you use a newer version of iOS, is the best way forward.

Will developers update SS6 to resolve the issues on (very old) iOS 9?  Maybe.

I'm just being honest, there is no tone.  There are just the realities we have to work with at this time.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Keiron,

I can't speak for iOS or Mac, but yes, you CAN find and re-install older versions of Android SkySafari.  The only hitch is that you had to have purchased the older version.  I've done it.  I went to the Google Play store and found and downloaded and installed SkySafari-5 Pro.  So I had both SkySafari-5 Pro and SkySafari-6 Pro on my phone at the same time.

For Android users, you do this through Google Play.  On your phone or tablet, tap on the "Play" icon.  On the Play site, look at the very top left of the screen.  There should be an icon of three horizontal bars.  Tap it.  On the next screen tap the very first item, "My apps & games."  On the next screen, at the top are three tabs:  "Updates, Installed, Library."  Tap "Library."

You'll get a list of all the apps you've purchased in the past -- ordered by whether they're currently installed or not.  On my phone, I get the not installed ones first.  They're not in alphabetical order.  Scroll down until you find the old app you want to re-install.  Tap the "Install" button to the right.

I just did this and even found SkySafari-4 Pro.

    Roger,

But as I've said many times before, I doubt that this will solve the problem for you.  It didn't for me.  This long-running problem is a combination of Celestron changing their code as well as SkySafari changing their code.  If you've updated the firmware in your Celestron device, then rolling back to the previous version of SkySafari that used to work probably won't work any more.  That's how it was for me.

    Greetings All

I have not updated the firmware in my Celestron for the reason you state, possible clashes with the control software.

I still have and will use 4+, 5+ as well as SkyPortal. and despite all I believe SkySafari to be the market leader in Astronomical software.

To operate the telescope from a mobile phone or iPad is still an eye opener at Open Reach events.

Although disappointed I will wait patiently for your SkySafari 7 to arrive, and any further updates to the v6+ software,

I may well have a new iPad by then but if not will make carefully check the iOS version comparability before purchase.

Will you have the Mizar A&B issue sorted by then. In a previous thread you mentioned it was a difficult issue to sort although OK in SkySafari 4+

    Many Thanks

    Roger

    Woody,

I believed Roger was referring to an earlier version of SkySafari 6, not SS5 or SS4 - the latter, which you are right, can always be installed from the App Stores, provided you previously purchased them, and are running a supported OS.

    Thanks both for your feedback!

    Hi Keiron

I believe in the latest upgrade to SS6 you have sorted the problem of Scope control for the earlier versions of IOS.

    Many Thanks for that.

I think it would be prudent not to update my old IPad 3 again, should you bring out another update, at the moment anyway.

    Regards

    Roger
