Why Do The Slew Buttons Become Unresponsive Using SkySafari 6 Pro + AstroPhysics GTO Mount? (Answer: Submitted Log File, Errors Found, And Now Under Review)

Hi all,

While training on our new scopes using AP GTO CP4 mounts with the iPad screen in Daytime Mode NOT in Night Mode red, we've had a couple of occasions (after a GOTO is performed) while using the slewing buttons to center the object in the FOV, the slew control buttons become non-responsive and the little scope popup that shows the 4 selectable slew speeds turns red.

The only way out is to disconnect and reconnect and sometimes shut down SkySafari and restart it to regain use of the slew controls.

Because I can't keep track of any sequence of button pushes while operators are doing their thing, I have no idea why this function freezes up. Maybe simultaneous button pushes contrary to each other? Holding down one of the buttons too long? Changing the slew speed while slewing?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

We have almost or completely eliminated the freezing problem by setting the sampling rate to 10/sec instead of 4/sec. We need more nights to be absolutely certain, but the first night we operated two telescopes for 90 minutes with multiple operators, we had no instances of slew buttons freezing.

I'm still not sure what triggers the slew speed display to turn red. I thought it may be moving the telescope past set limits, but the red issue still happens when moving thru safe parts of the sky. No clue here.

    Hi Jim,

Can you tell me what version of iOS the iPads are running?

Would you be willing to create a log file of one of the sessions? That would also help us troubleshoot.

To do that, go to settings/telescope setup, and turn on the 'Save Log File' switch at the bottom.

To send us the file, connect the device to your mac using iTunes. Select the device and then choose 'Apps' or 'File Sharing' in the left menu.  Your SkySafari app should appear in a list in the right pane.  Select it, and then click on the ScopeLog file and save itto your mac.  You can then email it to support@simulationcurriculum.com. (These directions are also in the in-app help for settings).

    Hi Ros,

I just updated my personal iPad to 12.4.1 and all six of the iPads at the observatory have that update awaiting, so I was going to take care of that today. They should all be on 12.4.1 in the next few hours. I'll have to check the currently installed version when I get to work in the next hour on which the problems have occurred and I'll let you know that as well.

I would be glad to create a log file. I have a scheduled session with a Planewave tech for another problem at 5pm tonight, so I'll try to do a session and create the log for you this evening if all goes well.

I will not be using a mac to connect the iPad, but a Windows machine. I assume the process will be more or less the same. I'll post another update here after checking the installed iOS version on the iPads.

The iPads used for the last few weeks are on iOS 12.3.1.  Going to update to 12.4.1 before testing later today and running the log.

I decided to run a test on the 12.3.1 version first and I got a couple of slew button run-ons after lifting finger from the slew button. I'll email that to you that log now, and do another test after the upgrade.

Just sent another log file after the upgrade to 12.4.1. There are two instances of run-ons there as well. at 1:08 and 1:28 PM.

Thanks, Jim.  The logs do indeed show some errors and we are working on tracking them down.
