What Happened To SN8 Beta Testing? (Answer: Beta Testing Will Resume Once The Next Update Is Underway)

Hello

I was originally a beta test for SNPP and often submitted bug details. Very few if any were dealt with.  Now I cannot even find the links to the beta forums.  Has the beta testing been abandoned?  I have been trying to use SNPPv8 beta on my fast Win-10 laptop with my scope.  It is virtually unusable. I decided to try to get some communication with the writers but there is no discoverable link.  Is it all over?

    Hi Lawrence,

As a previous beta-tester, you can login to beta.starrynight.com and download the latest version of SNPP8.  You will find your user name and registration beside the beta download links.

If you have difficulties with the program you are welcome to post specific issue(s), with a path to reproduction (i.e, X -> Y = Z) here.  Please create a new post for each different issue.

If you're logging into these forums using the same email account that you used for the beta testing then you should still have access to the SN8 beta testing forum here:

Starry Night | Beta Testing Starry Night 8

    Thanks!

please see unanswered posts on the forum that you mentioned! The query is simple: the versions are inconsistently anomalous.  please investigate.  I am using a version that is not listed !

and please note Keiron that you used a no-reply address as well...… referring me to an unused beta forum!

Lawrence, I can not follow the issues discussed here.

    1. "versions are inconsistently anomalous"
    2. "version that is not listed"
    3. "used a no-reply address"

I'm not going to guess at anything - what is with all these ambiguous statements?

Please provide concrete specific details about whatever issue concerns you, such that we can have a meaning discussion about it.

    Thanks!

Hello Keiron.  I would have preferred to post privately but you have given me a no-reply address.

I have posted these queries before on the beta forum but nothing has been answered and the most recent post there is 5 months old!

    1 - 8.0.3.1785 - June/26/2019 16:37 EDT) (Size: 2.34GB)

The above is a copy of the 'latest' version available for download.

BUT the version that I have on my laptop for Win-10 is 8.0.5.1896

Hence query 1!  This version is not listed ( also = point 2).

It should be realised that on many occasions I have documented bugs and on each 'update' I have experienced the same bugs every time. Hence that comment.  I have been trying to use SNPP v8 beta with my equipment but the latest bug - severe delays in doing anything despite my high-speed laptop - persuaded me that I would report this once and then say goodbye.

    regards

    Hi Lawrence,

If you have the time and patience to further assist here please post a screenshot of the version "on my laptop for Win-10 is 8.0.5.1896".

In Help >>> About <<< please screenshot this panel and upload here.

When we are going to release the next update for Starry Night we will be again reviewing all the beta reports.

Your beta-testing is very much appreciated, always.  And your frustration understood.

    Thanks!

    Hi Lawrence,

The beta program is on hold at this time.  So, it is best just to use the release version, and if you want post bug reports in the community forums or send them directly to me.

    Thanks!

I don't have access to a release version AFAIK. I've been on the various beta releases sending in bug reports (to seemingly no avail). Perhaps you can send me a link to a release version?

    regards

No response to private email of two weeks back so I am reposting.

I removed the beta SNPPv8 and then cleaned the registry. I then downloaded the official release and installed it. Unexpectedly it did not require any data entry .... and it turned out to have retained all the settings from the beta version including registration code! Operationally it is behaving exactly the same as the beta without showing the beta symbol. It has retained location and all other settings, and shows 'not responding' when anything is selected ..... until resuming several seconds later.

I can't imagine what (if anything) I might have done wrongly this time. I could not find a 'version number' online to verify that the data shown is genuinely the official version - 8.0.2.1718

Surely it should not be this difficult?

    Lawrence,

To this point I have only been beta testing as well. Do you have the information Keiron sent on the release version so I can see if the observing list bug I am seeing in this beta is present in the release version?

Hello Chris.  I have absolutely no idea unfortunately!  Despite many bug-loggings I never received any comment from Keiron at all.  None of my logged bugs were ever dealt with so I stopped using the beta version and reverted to other software.  Every few months I have tried getting SNPPv8 beta to work but the bugs are always there and they are so obvious.  Eventually I did get a response from Keiron (!) suggesting that I remove the beta and install the alpha version.  From here you can read my previous email....… It simply does not work properly and not surprising since the settings have been retained despite registry cleaning! Keiron has not responded to several emails about this problem.  Sad …..
