How To Import SN6 FOVs Into SN8, And Why Don't FOVs Created In SN8 Appear On My Starchart? (Answer: Help > Import SN7 Data, And Read On)

I've recently upgraded from SNP 6.x to SNP 8.

I had FOV circles around each of my Meade LX200 8 inch classic guide stars so at a glance I would see which two guide stars were available for setting the telescope to.

In the past when upgrading or reinstalling I would simply copy and paste a few saved files from the users/ app data and I would be good to go with all my old settings, bells, and whistles.

With SNP8 I find this impossible to accomplish. Perhaps there is a way, unfortunately, I haven't found it.

On to plan two. add all new FOV indicators. I chose yellow for the color and 5deg circles around Arcturus, hit done, a few drop downs happen fast  then the window closes looking like it worked. However, there is no yellow FOV circle around Arcturus. I have show FOV selected.

Any suggestions?

    Hi Michael,

Try the Help >>> Import SN7 Data option.  This may work for SN6 data as well.

Please also see this KB article regarding the differences between where data is stored in SN6 vs SN7/SN8.

And please review this screenshot, confirm you have the same.

    Thanks!

Sorry it has taken a bit to get back. However Astronomy is a slow motion sport for the most part. In order to get the screen shots I wanted I had to dig up my old Quick Time pro serial number to make the screen shots with SN6 Pro.

When I tried to transfer my settings with cut and paste from 6 to 8 I found out too late not to rename the folder Pro Plus old. I did that and replaced the Pro plus folder with the proplus from SN6. When I opened SN8 the program deleted the pro plus old renamed the new pro plus folder Pro Plus old. lol go figure. I ended up deleting and reinstalling SN8 Pro.

Here are the screen shots. SN6 Pro as you can see I have multiple FOVs they stay centered over each selected star while the star field rotates.

The screen shots from SN8 the FOV centers in the view and will not rotate. When I add multiple FOVs they stack up on top of one another centered in the view.

Oh! BTW thanks for the screen shot. After making mine look like yours I was finally able to see the FOV circles. Having said that, the, now visible, FOV circles stack up on one another Fixed in the center of the view.

How do you create the FOVs in SN6.  What steps did you take?

    Thanks for the screenshots, Michael!

Really simple in SN6 Pro. Right click on a star or any position on the view. A drop down menu appears. Click on Add FOV Indicator, then another drop down menu  appears exactly the same as SN8 Pro with choices to Name, color, and diameter in degrees.

I also inserted the SN6 FOV.txt file in the correct folder in SN8, also no joy SN8 ignores the text file. I am of the suspicion that this functionality needs quick time.

No problem in the end for me since I have SN6 pro on the laptop I take in the field with good fovs for my guide stars.

Thanks for the help and who knows perhaps a solution will, ahem, "Pop Up" or "drop down"

Michael – Here is one way to identify Meade alignment stars in SN8. There are still several problems with this approach. Three stars will not show labels even though they are selected (Aldebaran, Fomalhaut, Pollux) – I do not know why, maybe because they all have exoplanets? Two stars are given with database names, not “modern proper” (generally Arabic) or Bayer (HIP71683|Alpha Centauri|Rigil Kentaurus and HIP76267|Alpha Coronae Borealis|Alphecca). These two will not match the Autostar II names. I have this set up as a favorite view and start the night’s alignment with it.
