How To Export Observing List Data From Starry Night 8 And Import Your Own Images? (Answer: Use LiveSky.com For Data Export And Right-Click Any Area In Space And Choose Import For Images)

Hello,

I've been a Starry Night Pro Plus user for many years. I am advancing my astrophotography skills with my observatory by using Sequence Generator Pro to automate my observing. I've read that Starry Night Pro Plus can output an observing list to import into SGP, but I can't seem to find an export from Starry Night Pro Version 8 that will work. Is this functionality broken?

Also, I've noticed several deep sky objects that have no image detail when zooming in on the screen. For example, the Elephant Trunk nebula just shows up as a few stars in the region but no nebula is displayed. Am I missing a database download to fix this or do many of these images not exist?

Clear skies,

Dale

    Hi Dale,

Where have you read that Starry Night Pro Plus can output an observing list to import into SGP?

Starry Night 8 syncs all your data with LiveSky.com - where if you login you can then export your data as OAL or CSV.

To make the ultimate size of Starry Night manageable not all deepsky objects have included images.  However, if you right-click on any area of space you can import your own images.

    Thanks!

    Hi Keiron,

One can read this in the wonderful SGP-book of Alex McConahay (page 360) and that Starry Night is the only planetarium program with a direct interface to SGP.

So it's very disappointing that one can no more find this described function in SN8-Pro :-(

    Dietmar,

Please copy and paste page 360 here.  Or, attach a photo of the page.

    Thanks!

Yes, this is where I found out about it. I don't know if that was functionality that existed when the book was printed and subsequently taken away, or if the book was in error. But I sure would love to use Starry Night Pro as a planning tool for SGP.

    Dietmar,

Starry Night 8 syncs all your data with LiveSky.com - where if you login you can then export your data as OAL or CSV.

Please do this and see what happens.

    Thanks!

LiveSky.com is free.  Create a LiveSky account via SN8.  Sync your data.

Login to LiveSky.com.  Export your data.

    Thanks!

I, too, would like to know how to export observing lists into SGP as they currently state in SGP 4 (most current version) in their help files.

I did do an export from LiveSky in CSV format and noticed that the DEC data is incorrect.  It is truncating the arc seconds to zero's, see attached.

Also, the file format is not compatible with SGP, but I think it can be copied and pasted into a TXT document for import into SGP

Okay - it's possible to export observation lists from Livesky to csv or oal format. Nice.

BUT - how do you import your observation list from somewhere else, like AstroPlanner? I can only import from some sort of limited official repository. I want to import my own lists.
