I posted this elsewhere, but am still looking for answers: I thought I’d try it’s own thread. When I first purchased the app for my iPhone, (May 12,2020,) I could see C/2020 F8 (SWAN) (actually, it is the reason I purchased the app.) Now since yesterday (May 14, 2020,) it is gone from the app. Can’t find it. “No objects found matching search string” So, I uninstalled, and then reinstalled the app. The first few times I open and close the app, it finds it immediately—it is in the “Brightest Comet” tab and I can search the string C/2020 and see several comets. THEN, all the sudden, they disappear. Not just SWAN, but all C/2020 objects. They only reappear when I uninstall and reinstall the app. There was a solution posted elsewhere that involved updating the minor body’s in the solar system, and I thought this would work, but there is no “Update minor body orbit data” link under settings/solar system. Just some switches to toggle off/on asteroids, comets and satellites.

Robert Nielsen Steve,
The “setting” for updating the Minor Body Data is in a slightly weird place (not sure why). Scroll all the way down in the Settings -> SolarSystem panel. At the bottom will be some text centered that says “Last Updated:” with a date and time, and right above that is some text that says “Update Minor Body Orbit Data”. Tap on that text and it will switch to “Updating Minor Body Orbit Data” and when it completes (it takes minutes) it will show a pop up with the number of bytes downloaded and number of solar system objects updated.
Make sure the download is working.
If your download succeeds, it should work. I just searched for “C/2020 F8” (the first part of the name) and found it on my iPhone.
Good luck!
Robert

I do not understand why when I delete and reinstall the app, it will show the C/2020 items for a little while and then they will suddenly disappear.
(I’m getting tired of deleting and reinstalling just to find the comet.) -
Keiron Smith Hi Steve,
In Help > scroll to the bottom > what app (basic, plus or pro) and version are you running?
Thanks!
-
Steve Roberts SkySafari 6 ver 6.7.0.1
I am assuming that is basic… -
Keiron Smith Yes, basic.
The basic version updates minor body data automatically once a week.
I suspect what is happening is that, shortly after you reinstall, the app is auto-updating, however, the new data update does not, for some reason, include your comets. I will look into this.
If you do want the manual updating feature you can get it in the Plus and Pro version.
If you don't want to pay full price for the Plus or Pro version please subscribe to the Sky Safari mailing list here:
Wait 5 secs for the orange bar to appear along the bottom of the screen.
We will then email you when we are running a discount promotion.
Thanks for this report and patience.

Ros Hartigan Hi Steve, it is possible that the updated data is being deleted because the phone is low on storage space. Can you tell us what version of iOS you have, and if the phone is low on storage space?
-
Steve Roberts iOS 13.3.1 and I have over a gigabyte of free space.
I don’t understand why an updated data file would be deleted and not integrated into the main app. Why are they separate? -
Dave Chapman The 2019 and 2020 bodies continually disappear from SS6 Pro on my iPhone 11. I have to update the data base every few days. I have oodles of memory. This has been going on for months.

Cnnman Wang The issue is still there...

gregwoolever I have the same issue with comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) in my 6Pro version this week (July 8, 2020). I trigger the update minor body orbit data and it reappears, only to disappear again in minutes. Frustrating.

Keiron Smith Hi Greg,
Please include the following:
- App and version
- OS
- Available storage space
Thanks!
