I am seeing a message in the Android notification area that there is a download of an "Additional File for App "SkySafari 6 Pro" since several days (~7). It seems it is not completing the download. The tablet (Samsung Galaxy S3) is connected to my local WiFi network and other apps have no problem to use internet access.
I did reboot the tablet and did also clear the cache of SkySafari Pro 6 without any change in behavior.
Any advice what I can do?

Chris You might try uninstalling and reinstalling. Also, if you'd put your SS6 version and Android version here, that would help developers.
-
Roger Neumair Thanks Chris,
I will try uninstall and install.
Android Version 9
SkySafari Pro 6.8.6.3

Roger Neumair I did an uninstall and install. It downloaded around 1.5GB during the install.
When opening the app I am getting a popup showing "Installing data files ...". Progress stays at 0% now already for hours.

Roger Neumair Shutting down the app and rebooting the tablet did solve that problem

Elizabeth M Warner Had this happen on my Samsung Galaxy S9+. I have SkySafari6 Pro. Turning phone on/off did not fix. Finally, after three days and flailing around, I somehow got to a screen for SkySafari where you could turn the notifications on the notification bar on/off. Did that and after turning back on, the download indicator is gone.
If you go into your settings, apps, SkySafari, then into the notifications option and toggle the show notifications off then back on...

Ros Hartigan Thanks everybody for your suggestions. They have led us to what may be the issue.

Keiron Smith If you're still encountering an issue we implemented a fix this morning.
Hold down the SS6 app icon > App Info > Notifications > Turn off, then turn on notifications.
That should fix it.

Andre I have similar issue with SS6 pro, except the massage "14 data files downloading" pops up in SS6 screen and sits at 0%
I can't use the app because the massage blocks it from using.
Turning on/off phone and switching on/off app notification did not help

John Sillasen On my Android 11 phone, the "i" button is the one above the Select, Remove, Uninstall choices in SSF 6 Pro. That 'is brought me to the App info settings in Android - settings outside of Sky Safari. The download process stopped. Here's hoping it stays that way! New phone for me. Samsung Z Fold3 5G. If it comes back ( it won't Keiron said so), I'll comment again.

Andre This is what I get. It just sits there.

Andre Uninstalling and reinstalling SS6p did the trick. After that it has downloaded additional files successfully

Calvin Odom Turning notifications off and on solved the issue with the downloading additional files notification problem, but I'm left with a notification when starting the app that states that the files have been installed and are being used... With the option of pressing ok. But the notice stays up a while and will not respond for a while after trying to press ok, it just stays on the screen for perhaps 10 to 15 seconds until the app responds. Is there a fix for that? Google pixel phone, Android 12.

Keiron Smith We will have an open beta version available, with a fix, very soon.
Thank you for your patience.

David Dorfman Can't complete the initial install of SS6Pro on a Samsung Galaxy Tab E running Android version 7.1.1, 3.9G free storage. I am stuck at 11 files downloading before receiving the Retrying data transfer error and the loop continues. I have uninstalled and installed. I have turned notifications off and on. Still looping without completing the download. Occasionally, the number files drops to as low as 4, but is now stuck on 6. Do I need a more recent Android pad, or do I need an iPad, or should I just give up on SkySafari?
-
Keiron Smith If you quit and restart the app should download more data. Then quit and restart, the app will download more again.
Repeat until it has downloaded all the files successfully.
Thanks!

David Dorfman As of last night, there were still files to download. This morning, I opened SS on the tablet and it showed the sky. I was able to rotate the sky manually. Is there some way to verify that all of the files have been downloaded?
-
Keiron Smith If you see the sky, and objects have descriptions, then the download is complete and successful.
Thank you for your patience working though the issue!

David Dorfman When I worked in IT for an insurance company, this way of doing things would not have been acceptable. New code had to work on all platforms within the company and used by our customers. I had no way of knowing whether the problem was with your software or my tablet. I even ordered an iPad to replace the Samsung. Please disregard my request for a refund on the Android version and a new download of the IOS version.

Keiron Smith Android is notoriously challenging because any device manufacturer can run the Android OS, but the specs on the devices can be anything, sometimes very bare bones with regards to processing, memory, etc.
Due to changes in Android OS SkySafari developers had to refactor the code for SS6, and as a result, some devices have struggled to adapt with the changes.
For SS7, we will reduce the minimum supported Android OS, and thereby also the number of devices supported.
We are all always earning, the world of computing is ever-evolving, and sometimes at a blistering pace.
Trust that our developers have worked long and hard, late at night and through the weekends, in order to try and make good on this version of SkySafari.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Mark Someperson Hi Keiron,
Unfortunately the problem (or very similar) is still occuring on Sky Safari Pro 6.8.6.14
Platform: Lenovo Tab 4 10 304. Android 8.1.0. Kernel 3.18.71
Storage: internal 14.06 GB used of 16 GB. Sandisk SD Card: 4.18 GB Used of 32.00 GB
Permissions given for location and storage.- I had a previous version (probably installed around a year ago) which was working fine.
- I got offered version 6.8.6.14 a couple of days ago on Play store and told it to update.
- Update appeared to go fine.
- When I run SS6P, I get the message "14 data files downloading"
- This stalls at 23%, then loops.
- Left it running overnight, but still looping.- Uninstalled, booted device, reinstalled, booted device, ran SS6P - Same behaviour loops trying to install files.
- Uninstalled, booted, reinstalled, switched off notifications as discussed in this thread. Ran SS6P, same behavior.
- As above but switched to aircraft mode to prevent comms. Error "Retrying GAIAStars_skydat after transfer error".
I am a (fairly new) Android Dev with 40 years dev experience on other platforms, and understand the frustrations with Android. If there's any further info I can supply or any tests you want me to try out, don't hesitate.
I use SkySafari for controlling my C925 telescope and am somewhat scuppered without it.
Regards,
Mark

Keiron Smith We will release another beta soon, with a fix that works for everyone.
Thanks for your patience at this time.

Alex Z Do you plan on fixing this problem soon? Just paid for the pro version (Feb 2nd) and it's totally useless since I can't get past the download bug. Tried all of the above possible fixes and it still will not get past the downloading step. If you can't fix the problem after 2 1/2 months how about offering an older version of Sky Safari that does work or stop selling it? I have no issues with the free version except I wanted to control my telescope with the app.
-
Keiron Smith We are working on the issue. It is not a simple fix. But, the fix is coming, and so more time is required.
We have no previous versions of SS6 to offer.
However, if you want to send me your GPA receipt number I will issue a refund.
Thanks for your patience.
