Does Starry Night Celestron SE/Pro/Pro Plus Support Celestron WiFi? (Answer: No - Get SkySafari Plus Or Pro)

I have a new Celestron Nexstar Evo 8 Edge HD but I can't connect the Starry Night program (provided by Celestron with the telescope!) to it per WiFi. I was able to connect without problem per WiFi (built in, not from Hand Controller) to both Sky Portal and Ski Safari on my iPhone 12 pro, but cannot get it to connect to my Macbook pro with Starry Night. (MacOS 10.14.6, Hand controller: NXS 5.31.9102, Mount controller: 7.17.0098)

Is it still not supported? The Starry Night website seems to indicate that it is.

Perhaps I need to change the IP address or port? I even tried the IP address for the Celestron that I found in the Network preferences (1.2.3.4 and 1.2.3.5), but it didn't help. I have tried every connection type and every scope type found in the preferences. I tried a direct wifi connection to the telescope and also an access point connection over my home wifi network. Every time I get the “communication error” below.

    Michael,

Starry Night does not support Celestron WiFi.

    Apologies for the miscommunication.

Can you point me to the product page that suggests Celestron WiFi is supported?

    Thanks!

The main grounds for confusion, is that Starry Night is included with the purchase of this telescope at all. It would make more sense to include something that works with the telescope, like SkySafari.

Anyway, thanks for your trouble. Here is the link and a screenshot with the misleading information. Best regards~~~

Your Evolution mount comes with built-in Celestron WiFi.

We also develop Celestron's SkyPortal app (FREE) and SkySafari (FREE and PAID) which you can install on:

    • iOS (iPhone, iPad)
    • Android

SkyPortal is, in fact, the software specifically designed for your Evolution mount.

SkyPortal is free, and connects via Celestron WiFi.

SkyPortal is a cutdown version of SkySafari.  SkySafari also supports Celestron WiFi.

All Celestron GoTo scopes come bundled with Starry Night, which is why you received a copy.

You can connect Starry Night to your Evolution mount, but you would need to use either a USB cable from your computer to your mount - or get our WiFi solution, SkyFi 3.

Try SkyPortal.  If you want to upgrade get SkySafari Plus or Pro.

    Thanks!

Sorry for my ignorance as a beginner but I assume that Celestron Wifi is not compatible with iOptron SkyFi? I got the iOptron GEM26 mount and I am not able to connect from SN8. I guess this would be a topic on its own?

Yes, it is a topic on it's own.  Please create a NEW post here:

Starry Night 8 | User Support

There are a few telescope control WiFi solutions on the market.

    1. Celestron WiFi
    2. iOptron WiFi
    3. Simulation Curriculum's SkyFi 3

They all achieve the same result - telescope control - but each has it's advantages.

    Thanks!
