When Is SkySafari 7 For MacOS Going To Be Released? (Follow This Post For Updates!)

Any plans to make this upgrade or is version 6 the last for Mac OSX?  If no upgrades coming, can you offer those of us who have 6 pro an upgrade path to Starry Night?

Thanks!

    Jerry,

We will announce here future plans for SS7 on MacOS.

Maybe Pedro Braganca can share his vision at this time.

    Thanks!

Apart from 'when', I was wondering 'if' there will be a version 8 of SS? I've invested in both SS on iOS as well as MacOS and use them in conjunction. So I would be very disappointed if SS would not be continued on MacOS.

    Willem,

We are not developing SS7 for MacOS at this time.  Sorry, I can not offer an ETA on any future, or 'if' development.

It is highly likely SS7 for MacOS will be developed and released, as there has always been a Mac version too.

    Thanks!

I got an email today from promotions@skysafariastronomy.com with the subject line:

"July Astro Events & SS7 Pro on macOS!"

This implies that Sky Safari 7 is available on macOS.

Blow I include a screenshot from the email which again strongly implies that SS7 is now available on macOS. However I can't find it in the app store or on the web site.

It appears that SS7 for MacOS only works on M1 Macs... If you have an Intel-based Mac it doesn't show up in the store. This is a very quick hardware deprecation by Simulation Curriculum. Two years.... Even Apple keeps supporting hard- and software for a much longer period than that. It's quite an experience that my Mac Pro from 2020 cannot run SC's software.

I just downloaded it on my M2 MacBook Pro. Turns out it is just the regular iPad app, not a MacOS app. MacOS support now iPad apps to run on MacOS. Not a great user experience. Touchscreen works very different than trackpad, let alone mouse.

This "buy one OS, get one free" is a bit of a bold statement, since it literally is the same app.

If you really want to run it on a Mac, at least there is now an option. The other option is using the web-based app. I tried that, but underwhelming experience compared to the regular app, so quickly canceled my premium subscription.

Version 6 is actually generally fine. But my scope displays are not working anymore. They behave completely erratic. It probably is a sync issue with LiveSky, but even full uninstall and re-install did not solve the issue.

Exactly Willem. Not great customer support.

I just downloaded it on my Mac Mini M1 OS.  As said above it's the iPad app. How in the Hell do you zoom in or out with a mouse?

    Thanks - James

    Thanks for the info.

    This is very deceptive marketing.

I normally run SF6 on an Intel Mac, but I also have an M2 Macbook Air, so I tried installing it - the first time I've tried an iPad app on the Mac. It's not too bad, but the deal breaker is that the window is a fixed size. So you're stuck with that size or full screen. So even on the M2 Mac, SF6 is a much better experience.

I wonder what this means for future support on the Mac? Will there ever be another proper Mac version of SF or are we stuck with SF6 forever?

Surely if version works on true MacOS then they can get version 7 to work. Just laziness I guess.

SS7 is only available for MacOS as a crossover iPadOS applications.

There are no plans at this time to release a native version of SS7 for MacOS.

However, the iPadOS version will continue to receive updates deemed necessary by the developers.

I've logged the request to expand the currently fixed size panel.

    Thanks!
