2004 BL86 - How to force load the asteroid!

    Follow

    Hi Starry Night Astroid Hunter!

Having trouble loading 2004 BL86?  Here is how you resolve the issue.

    In Starry Night 7:

    1.  Delete the current Asteroids.txt file.  Go to:

    (Windows) \Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Local\Simulation Curriculum\Starry Night Prefs\Sky Data\Asteroids.txt

(Note that the AppData folder is often "hidden". A quick Googling can show you how to un-hide it)

    (OS X)  /Users/<YourUserName>/Library/Application Support/Simulation Curriculum/Starry Night Prefs/Sky Data/Asteroids.txt

Delete the Asteroids.txt file (or rename it "Asteroids1.txt")

    2.  Start SN7

    3.  Go to Help ---> Update Data Files

    4.  Quit SN7

    5.  Start SN7

    6.  Search "2004 BL86"

    In Starry Night 6:

    1.  Delete the current Asteroids.txt file.  Go to:

    (Windows) C:Program Files (x86)\Starry Night application folder\Sky Data\Asteroids.txt

(Note that the AppData folder is often "hidden". A quick Googling can show you how to un-hide it)

(OS X)  Right click the Starry Night application and choose "Show Package Contents"/ Contents/Resources/Sky Data/Asteroids.txt

Delete the Asteroids.txt file (or rename it "Asteroids1.txt")

    2.  Start SN6

    3.  Go to Help ---> Update Data Files

    4.  Quit SN6

    5.  Start SN6

    6.  Search "2004 BL86"

The horizon is saved, thank you!  I tried the help for the asteroid database.  It is not working.  But I am trying to find the comet Lovejoy.  How does the comet database get updated???  Thanks!

      Hi Heidi,

There is a Comets.txt file in the same place as the Asteroids.txt file.  Rename the Comets.txt file instead.  All the other instructions should be the same.

Let me know if that helps.

Dear Keiron:  Your solution did not work, but I went to my old computer (about to be disposed of) where I had Starry Night installed and copied the asteroids.txt and comets.txt files into the Sky Data folder folder on my new computer.  This helped to bring up comet Lovejoy after I opened and updated.  So far so good!  Would you know how to set the program that it automatically asks to update files when you start up?  It did that on the old computer.  Thank you!

      Great work, Heidi!

Look in Preferences ---> Startup/Auto Update ---> check for updates (option).

Thank you, Keiron!  I think I am all set with the installation now.  Might there be any more .txt files that I should copy from the old computer before I kill it?

If you don't have any more important saved settings (i.e. equipment lists, locations, etc) you can let it go to tech heaven :)

Hi Keiron:  It was so far so good yesterday, but not anymore.  I get the blue screen of death now when I want to start Starry Night and it tells me to contact the manufacturer to ask about it.

It said that a recently installed program needs to be removed so I removed Starry Night Pro Plus 6.  Do you think on a Windows 7 system I need a newer version?  Thank you!
