Development of Starry Night 7 is proceeding quickly, so I thought I'd take a sec to update everyone on what we're working on.
In the very short term, we'll release Starry Night 7.0.2, mostly to address crashes and other incompatibilities that weren't discovered during beta-testing. We're focusing on issues that make it difficult to use the app, and features that might be broken. I'm taking this week to true up the Equipment list too.
In the weeks to come, we're going to take a solid look at all of the feature requests, suggestions and comments all of you have made, as well as usability issues discovered by our Beta-Testers.
We'll be rewriting the Observation Logging feature, with a particular emphasis on sharing logs... with each other and with other applications. We'll be sure to enable importing of your V6 logs, not to worry!
In addition to improving all of the obvious observing features, we'll be looking at other ways to share experiences with your friends and co-observers, improve add-to and refine our databases, and improve the speed of the application.
Stick with us. Lots of interesting things to come.

I was very impressed with the updates seen in version 7.0.1. You addressed several of issues I was having, issues were resolved. The equipment list bug I know is important to many of us imagers. Looking forward to the 7.0.2 fix. I think it may prove beneficial to have a forum which allows for offline correspondence also. You have done great job addressing issues to date. Thank much! Very Much Appreciated! I do like the look and speed of the new interface much.

Hi, Just purchased Pro 7 for my Mac, sometimes it crashes in different areas, either by say adding an eye piece of selecting an object to view. Have upgraded to 7.0.2 but no success.
My Mac as 10.9.x on it, 8Gb RAM, 1TB hard disk and a fast processor, not a hardware issue as it works fine with other programs, PS etc.
Any idea?
Thanks
Nick
Great stuff!! Loving the new version and looking forward to future updates.

The update process for v7.0.2 seems a little flakey. I currently have 7.0.0.97, and despite many attempts over an hour or so, I keep getting this error message :-
Patch failed to apply to this file: C:\Program Files (x86)\Starry Night Pro Plus 7\starrynight.exe
Because that file failed to patch, and there's no "catch-all" update to download, the update failed to apply. The failure to patch usually happens because the file was modified from the original version. Reinstall the original version of this app.
Internal error: End of stream reached with 46080 byte left to read.
Honestly, I'd much rather a straightforward download of a zipped install file.
Also, how about a 180x180 FoV display that actually fits with the size of the display
area, adapting to the height or width of curent size of the SNPP 7 display as the user changes
the window size?
I take scientific allsky images of airglow, and need an horizon to horizon, hemispheric view
of the sky - one that could be prrinted out.
Lots of nice stuff happening in general in SNPP 7!

Nearing the end of October and still no activity on the log feature. I've communicated my desire for the feature elsewhere and get the response that this site is where the request should be directed along with a request that I include other items that need attention. If SNP7 can not fix the log feature after six months why would I foolishly expect any other request receive any attention? I'm sure others that miss the log feature are also questioning the sincerity of your commitment to rewrite the observation log feature as described by Dave Whipps in his April 15,2014 note above.

Brian,
You're absolutely right, of course. This feature is long overdue. I could recite a long list of excuses about why we haven't been able to get to this feature yet, but, if you've stuck with us this far, I hope that we can hang onto you for a little while longer while we sort this out. (This feature is scheduled for Starry Night 7.2.0, for release before the end of the year.)
While that might be frustrating, this is a great opportunity for you (and other interested and engaged users) to put in your two cents to the functionality and implementation of this all-important feature.
You can always message me personally at dwhipps@simulationcurriculum.com or reply here (or on our Yahoo group), but I visit CloudyNights only infrequently, so that might not be the best place for them.

Thanks Baugham2, Its nice to know I'm not alone on this.

How we doing on the 7.2.0 release? Just wondering. What's a few more weeks waiting to old friends.

I guess no one at Starry Night checks this board very often or feels questions about updates need to be answered. I feel as though I have been civil in requesting that the log feature that was listed as being part of SN7 when I purchased it be added and is delayed past the scheduled date of release. Not even a word about problems or successes just dead air since the middle of October. I'm very disappointed in your lack of response in a timely manor.
Brian
Brian,
Sorry for the lack of communication. There's a lot going on over here, so sometimes we're not able to reply to stuff right away.
That said, we're making progress on the Logging feature (it's the primary feature we're working on right this second) but had re-thought things a bit midway through, and so it's taking a bit longer than expected.
Are you a beta-tester? If not and you're interested, you can sign up at http://beta.starrynight.com, so that you can have the chance to comment, before things become official.
Also, as always, if you want a response right away you can always email me at dwhipps@simulationcurriculum.com.
Thanks for your patience with us!

No, David I’m not a Beta Tester. I am an amateur astronomer, I am not an IT specialist and feel that chasing code and shuffling misplaced files an ugly chore. I just want a planetarium / observing program that preforms as advertised and where problems are addressed in a timely fashion. I could and have used MS office (Word) to create an observing log that allows me to record my observations and organize my sketches, photos and notes by date. I think I should be using Excel that would give me better filing and retrieval abilities and will go that route if SN7 log is not forthcoming or inadequate for my needs. I was hoping that by buying a professionally built planetarium/observing program I could use my time observing and logging my observations, sketches and photos in a program that would aid in organizing my hobby. My needs are simple it would be nice to have a more integrated log format than I have the skills to design. I was hoping SN7 would be able to furnish this integration where data bases are already built in.
