Power Adapter for SkyBT

I seem to recall reading that the SkyBT can be powered using a 5V DC power supply in lieu of batteries.  Am I correct to assume that a 12V power adapter should not be used?

The internal batteries would provide it with 3v (and if they are rechargeable batteries such as Eneloops then I think those are only 1.2v each so that gives it 2.4 volts).  I mention this because it occurs to me that it does have the ability to recharge the internal batteries if I recall the manual correctly.

The external power supply is supposed to be 5v.  I *think* might have recalled reading that if you use a 5v DC power supply that you should either (a) remove the internal batteries or (b) only use rechargeable batteries (because I think it tries to recharge the batteries and that would be bad if you have non-rechargeable batteries.)

Bluetooth is a very low-power radio ... it doesn't use nearly as much energy as WiFi, so the SkyBT adapter really doesn't need much power and can last quite a while.

Using 12V will probably fry the unit.  Don't do it.  As stated in the Quick Start Guide that came with the SkyBT, you should only use 5V for external power.  You also need to have rechargeable batteries installed for this to work since the external power port is part of the recharging circuit.

I use this cable to provide 5V power via USB.

Thanks Bill.  I haven't done it... didn't think it would be very wise... just wanted to double check.

Unless I missed it or am misinterpreting what I read, the guide is not clear that rechargeable batteries are required to be installed when using the external power port.  "NOTE: Use only NiMH rechargeable batteries when externally powering the adapter".   I understand that you are saying NiMH rechargeable batteries are required when externally powering the adapter

    Mike,

Yes, you must have rechargeable batteries installed for this to work.  They are part of the charging circuit and the circuit will not be complete without them.
