Cardinal Directions on Telrad Circles & FOV Rings

Hi,

Sometimes when I have several Rings and the Telrad selected, as I zoom into an object I notice that the Cardinal Directions disappears along with the outermost ring or Telrad for which it was attached to. If I'm taking observing notes, sometimes I forget the directions and need to then click the upper right and turn off the outer rings and/or zoom out all the way to the Telrad outring to see the orientation again. 

It's a minor request but helpful for me for the Cardinal Directions (which seem to only display for the outermost FOV and/or Telrad Circle) to either automatically adjust as I zoom the outermost FOV boundaries lines off screen to the next outermost visible (onscreen) FOV boundary line [probably difficult b/c of varying screen sizes] , OR for me to manually click on the FOV circle of my choice and have the Cardinal direction appear there instead. Perhaps a third way could be to select an option to sticky the cardinal directions to the edges of the screen rather than at the FOV rings or Telrad outer ring.

  Jeffrey,

  SkySafari hides some labels if they would collide with those already drawn.  That is probably why this is happening.  This has not normally been a problem for most people. I wonder if you have the label density turned up higher than usual for either stars of DSOs.

  I probably shouldn't have used the word "sometimes" -as if it were buggy. I think the Telescope-->Display-->Cardinal Directions function is designed to display either outside of the outermost configured FOV 'rings' OR of the outermost circle of the Telrad Circles. So that as soon as a user zooms in (causing the outermost ring to physically zoom past the screen edge), the cardinal directions are also zoomed off the screen with it. I just want to be able to click on the on-screen i.e. zoomed-in FOV ring or innermost Telerad circle to be see the cardinal directions again -rather than zooming back out. I'm sure development time can be better put to use -just a thought.

  This would be helpful.  As the user zooms in, the cardinal direction labels should change to the outermost ring that is still fully visible at the current zoom level.  Great idea.

  An annoying but usable workaround is to, as you zoom in, turn off the outer circles, making the next biggest FOV ring show cardinal directions.  Not ideal.

  Bill, I was thinking about this issue Sunday night when I was in the field and thought of another, possibly better solution to this problem.  Would it be possible to have the option to have cardinal directions on selected objects, as well as or instead of FOV rings?  I'm not sure if this was addressed in 6 or not. Thanks!

  Chris,

  Right now I think your two best solutions are:

  1. Turn off FOV rings that extend out of the field of view so you can see the directions.
  2. Show an equator grid so you can get directions using that.

  I like the idea of showing the cardinal directions on the biggest ring that is totally visible, but I don't think this is realistically going to happen soon.  We have a lot of higher priority items to work on at the moment.
