SkySafari 5 Pro -no wired telescope option

Hi to all. This is my first post. Thank you for this forum.

I can use my USB/serial cable with my iPad to communicate with my scope, but not with my iPhone 5s.

It only looks for the Skyfi  (I don't have it).

Why the difference between the iPad and iPhone for scope control options?

    Fivel,

I'm a bit confused.  The connection options for the iPad and iPhone should be identical.  Do both devices have a lightning connector (I know the iPhone 5s does).

When you say you use the USB/serial cable, are you referring to SkyWire?  That should also work on the iPhone.

If you plug the SkyWire into the iPad while SkySafari is running you should see a message saying the SkyWire has been detected.  Do you not get the same thing on the iPhone?

Do you have SkySafari on both devices?  If you have the Orion branded StarSeek app, that will not talk to our SkyWire.

Hello Bill and thanks for your reply.

    1. The cable I use is a USB to serial adapter (Prolific chipset, but purchased an ATEN with FTDI).
    2. I did a simulation with the iPad and the Gemini controller, just to see if the iPad connected.
    It connected and simulated GOTOs.
    3. When I connected the same cable to the iPhone, the message said it was looking for, and could not find (obviously) a Skfi wireless setup.
    4. I have the same SkySafari (5 Pro) on both devices.
When I get the new cable, I will try both devices again.
Also, the Gemini handset/interface has a menu option where I can see if there is two way communications.
That should help quite a bit.

    Thanks and regards,

How are you plugging the USB-to-Serial adapter into the iPad?  You need a lightning connector for the iPad.  I'm flabbergasted this works at all on the iPad, it really shouldn't.

Hi Bill. I have the lightning cable connected to a USB female-female adapter. The other side of the adapter is connected to the USB to serial cable, then a DB9 to RJ45 phone plug dongle, which connects to my mount controller.

I really won't know if there is complete 2 way communications until i hook it all up.

Since the iPhone did not even connect, I will try the iPad again tomorrow. Then I can use the mount handset, to see if the data is flowing both ways. It will be very interesting if it all works properly.

I hope Murphy is on vacation.

Wow!  I can't see how this can possibly work.  Normally the USB-to-Serial adapters need drivers installed to work.  Of course you can't install drivers on the iPad or on SkyWire.  Many people have tried this and failed.  If this really works for you I'd be interested in knowing what adapter you have.

Doesn't the Gemini 2 have an RS-232 serial port as well?  I know Gemini 1 does.  That would be the straightforward way to make this work.

Hi again Bill. I'm not as familiar with the Gemini 2, but I believe it also has an RS232 (RJ45?) port.

As you know, a lot of new mounts have USB ports, much simpler connectivity.

I will post any results I get once my new cable arrives.

If you are using a Gemini 1 then all you need is a Losmandy serial cable to connect to the SkyWire.  I have this exact setup.  You can get the cable from ScopeStuff.
