SkyFi Not On WiFi List

I have a SkyFi (I think it's SkyFi3, that's what it says on the back of the label as it's SSID).  I haven't used it in a while it's been sitting in a box, but I did have it working about a year ago, web interface and all.  Now I'd like to use it again but it's not showing up in my WiFi lists, not on my PC list or on my phone.  Two red lights are lit on the unit, the "Charging" LED, and the "On" LED.  I don't see a reset button or hole anywhere on the unit.  Any suggestions?

    Sal,

The charging light should go off after the unit is fully charged.  Are you saying the charging light never goes out?  That would probably be indicative of a bad battery.

    Hi Bill,

The Charging light has gone out.  It was on because the unit was out of use for about a year and the battery must have been pretty low - so I had it on the charger.

Problem remains: I'm not getting any SkyFi listing on my search for networks in Windows 10, iPhone or MacBook Pro.  I even installed a pro-level WiFi signal scanner called Acrylic and nothing shows up.

Should I just go away?  I've contacted Simulation Curriculum Support directly and was told I should post my request for support here, but this doesn't seem to be getting me any answers either.

    Sal,

Sorry, I didn't see your previous response.

It sort of sounds like the Wi-Fi radio in the unit has failed.  I think we've only had one other unit do this but perhaps you are the second.

You might try resetting the device before giving up.  We did have a but in a version or two of the firmware where the reset procedure was accidentally disabled, so this may or may not work for you.

RESETTING SkyFi III TO THE FACTORY DEFAULTS

    1. Power on SkyFi III.
    2. Press and hold the center button for 5 seconds, then release. The data LED (4, Fig. 1) will begin to flash slowly. When SkyFi III has completed the reset it will flash quickly.
    3. Release the center button and SkyFi III will power down.
    4. SkyFi III has now been configured to its factory settings.

See if you can reset it and if that makes any difference.  If not we can see about replacing the unit.  It sounds like you are technically outside the 1 year warranty but there may be something we can do.

    Hi Bill,

Thank you for the kind gesture.

I apologize for being a bit abrasive in my previous comment though, in my defense (if there is any), lately it's been my experience that vendors have been friendly before the sale, quick to take my money and slow or uninterested in their customer support.  I won't mention any names . . .

In any case, I've tried resetting the device but apparently, this is one of those units where this functionality is not available.

I would like to take you up on your offer.  What can be done?

    Sal,

I'm going to have Keiron take over and figure out how to best get you a working unit.  He should be in touch soon.
