SkySafari 6 Pro | How to Transfer Files from SS 5 Pro to SS 6 Pro?

Hi I’ve just bought this.

How do I transfer files and settings from Sky Safari 5 Pro. Sky Safari 5 observing lists etc is backed up to iCloud, I can see this files in my ICloud Drive but can’t work out how to input them into Sky Safari 6 Pro.

Thanks Richard

    Bill,

I don't understand why you are missing the point, but I guess I should have expected that given the decisions that have been made in version 6.

    I directly quoted you:

"The premium features let you *edit lists and equipment from your desktop machine*, but you can still do all that from the app itself, just like in SS5.  The premium level will also get you access to SkySafari running in a browser (you will be able to run SkySafari on Windows!!!).  This is not currently implemented but should be by the end of January when the premium pricing will start."

I also clearly point to the fact that TODAY with SkySafari Pro 5 on macOS combined with any iOS device if I've also purchased SkySafari Pro 5 for iOS ANY and ALL changes made on any of the three devices (macOS Desktop, iPhone, iPad) using iCloud all three copies stay in PERFECT synchronization.

This is critical functionality as I have 88 observing lists and a large equipment list with multiple, multiple FOV calculations and equipment to worry about.  You're now telling us that you've killed iCloud in version 6 and (almost) replaced it with LiveSky.  I say 'almost' because based upon your own statement you guys are now going to CHARGE us (aka Premium Feature) for macOS Desktop synchronization that was baked natively into the prior release.  I, honestly, don't think I'm missing the point here at all unless you're now telling me that the *ONLY* feature of Premium (for a FEE) will be to run SkySafari Pro 6 in a browser on Windows...for which I could care less personally.

So please clarify what you mean.  I am upset, Yes.  Why?  I own BOTH SkySafari Pro 5 on macOS, iOS and SN7 Pro Plus as well...for use on Windows.  I'll be honest - I want ALL of them to synchronize their respective lists - and the file formats don't allow this today!

Ron, there is no need to get snarky.  I am trying to address your concerns as best I can.

If the syncing between Mac and iOS is critical for you, then I don't recommend moving to SS6 until it is available on both Mac & iOS.  We should have the Mac version available in a couple of months.  Apple will happily refund your purchase if you want to wait and move to SS6 later.

I'll say this again.  We are *not* going to charge for data synchronization between iOS, Mac and Android.  This will be a free service.  Our intent is to have everything   you could do in SS5 be free in LiveSky.  Only the ability to edit your data on LiveSky will be part of the Premium package.

I just transferred my observing lists using iTunes (30 personalized .skylist files). I used the same technique as in prior upgrades and per the manual. I exported (save as) files to my desktop, then "added" the .skylist files to my SSP 6 app.

Additionally, I signed up for Live Sky. I now see the lists on Live Sky, but when I open SSP 6, all of them simply show "Fetching", and have not changed for perhaps 15 minutes. Is it truly "fetching" from Live Sky? Or is it "porting" the .skylist files to the local database on my iPhone? Please let me know. And...when do you think I'll be able to see the observing lists within my app? Please see enclosed screen shot.

    Thanks Bill.

    Jim,

We fixed this problem in the 6.0.1 release last Friday.  Please update and it should work now.

Just updated it and can confirm that it is fixed. I'm also running iOS 11.2.2. It was fast, so it is not going out and fetching anything from Live Sky, correct? It just shows resident items in the database? Thanks for the background on this.

I'm not actually sure where it was stuck fetching.  It may have already pulled the lists down but didn't clear the fetching status.  This wasn't in my part of the code.

Anyway, glad to hear it is fixed for you.

I am continuing to have problems with my observing lists. I was out observing Saturday night, and successfully opened several of my lists. At some point in the evening, the lists "froze". That is, when I selected a list, it displayed as highlighted, but did not open to the detail view. I tried other lists and got the same result. You can imagine how frustrating it was in the middle of my session.. See the screen shot below in night mode.

I decided to see if it would act differently when I got home and was on my wireless. I did not completely quite the app that night. The following morning, it continued to freeze (see second screen shot). After closing the app completely, it behaved itself again.

Can you explain how the new code treats local vs remote data in our observing lists? I was in a remote area on the mountain, and I assume SS relies on the local data on the phone when there is no signal or a weak signal.

iOS 11.2.2, latest build of SS

Sorry you are having problems.  I can only imagine how frustrating that is.

The app always uses local data but will sync with remote when internet is available.

I will make sure the person that deals with the syncing sees this and will hopefully get back to you.

Hi Jim, I'm so sorry you have had trouble with the app!  Just to clarify, when you where out in the field and clicked on the list, where you just unable to open the list and look at its contents, or did the app actually hang and prevent you from doing anything else?

We do store all the data locally, and have a 'local first' approach, only interacting with the server when there is a reasonable internet connection.

Thanks for your detailed error report!  I'll let you know as soon as we have more info for you.

The app allowed me to use other functions just fine. I tried returning to Observing Lists several times and experienced the same behavior. It also allowed me to select different lists. It was not "stuck" on one particular list.

Regarding "reasonable internet connection", I was in an area that might have had "reasonable" data from my carrier - it is a weak signal at best, but does exist. May I suggest that you reconsider the threshold? Not knowing anything about your specs or product goals, I would advocate for connectivity only under Wifi, or allow users to select under which conditions it attempts to connect.

We believe we have a solution for this problem.  I hope to submit a new version to Apple later today.  It generally takes Apple a day or two to approve a new release.

Hi Bill, I just downloaded 6 pro and this thread was helpful in syncing my setting's & observing lists through iTunes. The new app looks great. Some of the new features should be helpful from what I see so far.

After reading through this thread I have a question based on what you said here ""The premium features let you *edit lists and equipment from your desktop machine*, but you can still do all that from the app itself, just like in SS5. The premium level will also get you access to SkySafari running in a browser (you will be able to run SkySafari on Windows!!!). This is not currently implemented but should be by the end of January when the premium pricing will start."

I had 5 pro on my iMac, iPhone & iPad and was syncing info between them. Does this mean if I get premium I will no longer need Sky Safari 6 on my iMac since I can access it through the browser? I'm also wondering how smooth working through a browser will be compared to having the app on my desktop. Are there any features missing? What do you recommend?

    Thanks for your help.

The web version certainly doesn't have all the features of the Mac version of SkySafari.  We hope to bring them closer together in the future but it will take time.  So I still think most people will like to have SkySafari on the Mac (assuming they have a Mac).

Thanks Bill. I just looked at the cost of premium for the year and at that price it's silly not to have both the desktop & browser version.
