SkyFi 3 + SkySafari 6 Pro + iPhone 8 + SkyWatcher 400P GoTo DOB + StarSense for SkyWatcher Not Working

Hello:

I am having issues with my SkyFi 3 (1.3.4) unit not working since receiving it within the last two weeks. My equipment includes Sky-Watcher 400P/16" SynScan Dobsonian, StarSense for Sky-Watcher, SkySafari 6 Pro ("SS6P"), a standard USB A to Mini-B cable, iPhone 8 (iOS 14.4.2).  My procedure is to (1) perform a StarSense AutoAlign, (2) power on SkyFi 3, (3) Select SkyFi as the wifi network on my iPhone, (4) start SS6P, (5) confirm SkyWatcher SynScan and Alt-Az/GoTo as my scope and mount types, (6) confirm SkyFi is detected and then (7) try to connect on SS6P.  However, it never connects with or controls my scope.  And, after failure, it is no longer detectable.  It may take a couple power cycles to be become detectable again.  I can see the web page, as a result, sometimes but not always.  And, after viewing the web page, the SkyFi is no longer detectable.  Also, the unit has never been dropped since receiving it.

Oddly, the SkyFi 3/SS6P will provide the following error message when turned on, connected to the iPhone but, most importantly, not connected by the USB wire to the StarSense HC.  Maybe, it is better stated that SS6P can make a wireless connection, however brief or intermittent, with SkyFi 3.  The takeaway is that the SkyFi is not connected to the scope despite what the error message says:

SkyFi 3/SS6P will also show the following after having first done a StarSense AutoAlign through the hand control, second confirmed network selection on iPhone and then third connected USB cable to the StarSense HC because the SS6P no longer detects the SkyFi SSID:

The preceding error message appears despite seeing the screen below before trying to connect:

After clearing the error message and going back to settings, SkyFi is no longer detected:

SS6P intermittently detects SkyFi 3 or, put another way, SkyFi 3 is intermittently detectable.

Thoughts?

Joe

I have on order a USB A to B cable to test whether my SynScan HC works with my SkyFi 3 to see whether there is an USB issue with the StarSense HC.

    Joseph,

    1. I think you may need to choose a Celestron ScopeType option: NexStar GPS/SLT/SE
    2. Also, try disabling the option to Set Time & Location.
    3. Also, confirm you are running SkyFi firmware version 1.3.4.

Please let us know what happens.

    Thanks!

In response to question #1, I have tried that and selecting Alt./Az. -- no luck.  As for question #2, I just tried that and no luck.  And, yes, I am running 1.3.4.  Thoughts?

I am running 1.20.20265 on the StarSense HC.

    Joe,

The two error messages are relevant.  Please see if you can reproduce each error message consistently.

The first message saying "SkySafari CAN make a wireless network connection..." means that SkySafari and SkyFi 3 are together operating properly, and connected to the scope - but the scope is not receiving or transmitting commands.  At this point, the issue can be isolated to the scope, either the star-alignment (or failure thereof) or a setting in the StarSense hand controller that needs to be enabled or disabled.

Please also read your StarSense manual.  All required settings/configurations should be discussed in the manual.

    Thanks!

    Keiron:

I am getting the error message you cited.  The scope is aligned.  I will re-read the manual to see if I missed anything.  Thanks.
