Issues With AWR Intelligent Drive System + LX200 Protocol

This is the issue:

I have an AWR Intelligent Drive System which is a mature product with LX200 protocol dating from 1998 working with established planetarium programmes. I have Sky Safari 7 on a MAC and it fails to connect. When we were debugging at here we got it connected once then it was faultless. and does GOTO's etc no issues. We have come to the conclusion you have a start up sequence with the telescope that is not as per classic LX200. If you can tell us the command you are sending out and what you are expecting then we can modify our code to work. We have modified our version of the protocol over the years to incorporate new features such as 'get side of pier'.

The connection is setup for direct connection via SkyFi. There is no communication problem through SkyFi. We send a typical command such as :GR# and back comes the reply of the RA coordinate. According to you list the native mounts it will connect with includes both types we have tried. Any help would be appreciated, as Sky Safari is the right software to use. We just need to get a connection!

    Chris,

Please post a list of all the commands sent and received, if any.

    Thanks!

    Keiron,

    Thanks for coming back.

I am somewhat out of my depth here! Alan Buckman-Hardy from AWR is helping with this. He has said to me:

You need to ask SkySafari how to log the telescope commands and data that is being sent both ways on the link.

I am using a Mac - should I be using the 'Terminal' programme, or is there another way?

I really do want to get this working. I work with people with moderate learning disabilities, and they will get a lot out of seeing the object on the screen, and then looking through the scope. I did this for many years with my LX 200 until the mount broke! I am sure we will get there....

    Thanks, Chris

    Chris,

Save the Log File, per the screenshot below, then copy and paste the log file contents in your reply here.

    Thanks!

As you are using SS7 on MacOS you also have SS7 available on iOS or iPadOS.

Please do your troubleshooting using an iOS or iPadOS device first.

Confirm the connection issue exists on iOS/iPadOS before troubleshooting on MacOS.

SS7 was only recently released for MacOS, and it is a port of the iPadOS version - and perhaps there is a connection issue.

So, please confirm and troubleshooting using SS7 on iOS or iPadOS first.

    Thanks!

These are instructions for SS7 on iOS/iPadOS:

Save Log File - If turned on, SkySafari saves a log of its communication with the telescope on your mobile device. SkySafari creates a new log file every time you connect to the telescope. The log file records every command that SkySafari sends to the telescope, and every response from the telescope. The log file name contains the date and time you began the telescope session, for example:

    2014-01-31-12-34-56.txt

This log file can be emailed to Simulation Curriculum for troubleshooting telescope communication problems. You can transfer the telescope communication log from your iOS or Android device using iTunes file sharing (iOS) or SD file card transfer (Android).

    • iOS users - transfer the scope communication log to your computer with iTunes file sharing. Connect your iPhone or iPad to a computer running iTunes with a USB cable. Select your iOS device when it appears in iTunes, then find the "Apps" section. Choose SkySafari Plus or Pro from the list of apps. iTunes will then display the SkySafari Documents that can be shared with iTunes.

    Keiron,

Thanks for your help with this issue.

I have logged on this morning with my iPad.
I connected to SkyFi ok, and turned on the ’Save Log File.
I created the settings as Meade LX200.

I cannot enclose screen grabs I have - the system will not let me!

I then tried to connect and got this message:
SkySafari 7 Pro can make a wireless network connection to SkyFi but the scope is not responding.

Where is the Log File that has been saved? I cannot find it anywhere - I can send it to you.

    Keiron,

Further to the experiment with the iPad, I have now found the Log File!
The system will not let me upload a TXT file! Thats what comes out of the Log file. This needs to be made more flexible.....I cannot upload a PDF either......how do I get you the log files?? Just having jpeg, gif or png is ridiculous.......

    See enclosed.

    Keiron,

Further to this, I have now tried to log on using my Mac Mini - the normal unit I work with to drive the scope.
    This is running Ventura 13.4.

I set this up the same way, connected to SkyFi ok and set up as Meade LX200 Classic, german mount.

When trying to connect it said’ made a TCP/IP network connection to the telescopes IP address but scope is not responding.
I have saved the Log to the desktop and enclose it.

Also screen grabs of the other settings, etc.

    Hope this helps!

Can you let me have the E Mail address so that i can send all of these items to you please. The only one I have as a 'No reply' one, that I used yesterday but obviously did not work. I have some other items to send, but this forum does not allow you to send IMG jpeg files.......

    Thanks for your help,

    Kieron,

Since I sent this message on the 22nd July I have not heard anything. Can you help me please? I have supplied all the info requested.

Also do you think it may be a connection issue where too much data is being sent? Apparently I can stop data being sent on start up by unticking a box, somewhere?

I really do want to get this going. At the moment it will not work on any device, although I have installed the latest version on both Mac and iPad. You help would really be appreciated.
