Chris Keiron Smith This still hasn't been fixed, or even acknowledged since February, and is an annoyance on literally every object I log. Thoughts?
-
Chris Keiron Smith Any update on this? Thanks!
-
Keiron Smith Chris,
Please provide 2 screenshots.
- Showing what you see via Selection > Create New Observation
- Showing what you see via Observe > Observing Lists > Select List > Highlight Objects in Chart > Select Object > Select > Show Observations > Create Observation button
Make sure you are running the latest version of the beta.
I think this is fixed, it seems to be working for me, but maybe I am not understanding this issue correctly.
Thanks!

Chris Hey, I can take some screen shots, but wanted to make sure the issue was clear. The button that didn't used to exist (create new observation from view observations) was fixed. The issue is, when using that button, the observing list that's currently selected, of which the object being observed is a part of, isn't automatically being selected in the newly created observation. Screen shots to follow. Thank you!

Chris First, Selection > Create New Observation
Second, Selection > Show Observations > Create Observation
As you can see, the Observing List is None in the second screen shot, and correct in the first where it was tied to the currently displayed observing list, Messier Marathon.

Keiron Smith Sorry, Chris, I still do not understand.
The way I see it, the "Observing List: Messier Marathon" is only going to show up if...
1. You are creating a new object Observation via an Observing List. Or...
2. The object Observation being viewed/edited is already included in an Observing List.
As I am obviously missing the point here please make me a screen recording that shows clearly what you are experiencing, with a note that explains what you are expecting to happen instead.
Thanks!

Chris Yes, #2 applies, the object I'm creating an observation of (Messier 13) is already included in the observing list that's currently displayed. Whether I create the observation via 1) Selection > Create New Observation OR 2) Selection > Show Observations > Create Observation, the behavior should be the same within the app. It's MUCH preferred to have the list plugged in IF it's indeed on the list being observed. This has always been the behavior of SS going way back.
My guess is, what happened is, when the button was added back via the 2nd method (within the show observations menu) it somehow missed this step programmatically. Not sure?

Keiron Smith What version are you using?

Keiron Smith Does SkySafari 6 Pro on Android perform the way you expect it to?
It's still not clear to me what the issue is, so would help if we can show the developers exactly how it use to be. -
Chris I'm using 7.5.1.0 on my Pixel 9 Pro.
On SS6 (6.8.9.1) they didn't offer the ability to create a new observation from the Show Observations button, unfortunately. The iOS version also doesn't offer this button.
Let me try to explain this, since I'm obviously not doing a great job. :) Observing lists in SS are exactly that, a list to help you observe a set of objects in a given session or sessions. Let's say I create a list for tonight, 10/25/2024 is the name of the list and there's 5 objects. Let's say I curate that list in advance, go out in the field tonight, and go to Observe > Observing Lists and highlight that list. Let's say I click on the first object, and I'm ready to create my observation of it. It's really handy for SS to automatically plug in this observing list into my newly created observation, because it's obvious I'm working on that list (since it's highlighted). This is how SS has always worked, and it makes sense. However, when you create the observation from the 2nd location (Selection > Show Observations > Create Observation) the behavior is different. The selected observing list is NOT automatically input by SS. It has to be done manually. I can't think of why the app would behave differently if you create a new observation from one place vs. another.
I'll add that, I use this second perhaps longer route to create observations because I want to first see if I've ever observed it before or observed it recently. I really like this button, enough that I put up with the annoyance of having to enter my list every single time, manually. But it'd sure be nice if the observing list was automatically entered as it is when you click Selection > Create Observation.

Keiron Smith OK, I get what you saying now!
So, just to clarify a little more, in the past, if the list was highlighted, then it did not matter what pathway you chose to create an observation, it would always auto-fill the observing list field with the name of the highlighted list?
If that's it, I get it!
-
Chris YES! We've successfully communicated via keyboard. :) That's it exactly, IF the list was highlighted AND the object you're creating an observation for was in that list, it was auto-filled. Sorry for the confusion on this one.

Keiron Smith Great, thanks so much for your patience on this one! Ros will review your report!
