How To Get Custom Horizon Panorama To iOS Without iTunes? (Answer: Read On!)

As iTunes isn't available for macOS (I'm currently using 13.6, Ventura), I was wondering how to get my custom horizon PNG file into iOS. It seems that AirDrop or iDrive would be convenient for me.

The help file says to use iTunes, and I haven't found an alternative in a dozen posts here.

    Hi Barton,
On my iPad Pro in the Apple Files app there is a Folder named SkySafari Pro. Just copy image directly into folder.
So locate the SkySafari Pro folder on your mac. Here are my Port Crescent & Cherry Springs images in the folder. Once added then open up SkySafari.

Thanks for the reply, Garry. I haven't yet got it to work on iOS yet, but I will keep trying. I modified my image generation program to make a 2048x1024 file for iOS; the same program worked previously with macOS and a 4094x2048 image. (That's my understanding of the sizes from the help files.) Also, that directory didn't previously exist for either "SkySafari Pro" or "SkySafari Plus" (I have both) and I manually created them, so they might not be right. I'll try to trigger SkySafari to create the directory, and if it is different, I'll use theirs.

    Barton,
AirDrop will work to get the image into your ipad or phone. Then you copy the image & paste into the Files app folder SkySafari Pro. The name of the image will appear in SkySafari Pro’s Horizon Panorama list the next time SkySafari Pro is opened. The SkySafari Pro folder, as seen above, was created directly by SkySafari Pro. The folders & files in it were created by SkySafari Pro except for the pano images I pasted there. Is there not a SkySafari Pro folder like pictured above?

(Hmm... I've tried to answer twice before, but it did not post, for some reason. I'll try this message without attachments, if that makes a difference.)

The folders did not exist, until I created them manually. (Maybe SkySafari only creates the folder if it needs to store a file there, and I have not done what is required for it to create the directory?). I have not seen the custom panorama work on iOS (iPhone or iPad), but a similar but larger version of the panorama works with macOS.

If this post actually posts, I'll follow up with a screenshot of my directories, and include the horizon pararama that I'm trying to use.

And here is the python program that I'm developing that generated the panorama above, from a CSV file that describes the azimuth and altitude of horizon obstructions:

    Barton,
Are those directories in the Files app on your iPad?

(Maybe SkySafari only creates the folder if it needs to store a file there, and I have not done what is required for it to create the directory?) Try with SkySafari Pro on your iPad the following : Settings> Saved Settings > +Create Settings> Create Settings File> Save Current Settings.

Now recheck the Files app> Locations> On My iPad for the actual SkySafari Pro folder like pictured in above post.

Garry, thanks so much for helping me figure this out!

I went back to look at your earlier screenshot of your files, and "On My iPad" was selected, and I was in the "iCloud Drive" location. (I guess the other app folders there were created on my Mac.) So, while I had these files and folders downloaded to my iPad, they were not in the right location. Once in the right place, I didn't even have to restart SkySafari for the ViewFromDeck panorama to be in the list.

It is a pitifully small slice of sky that is visible between the trees, and having this horizon feature working reduces my frustration in figuring out "is X even visible now?". I found a bug in my conversion of the script from macOS to iOS sizes. My actual view from the deck is even worse!

    Barton,
Agree that is fairly restrictive view but at least now you’ll know what’s visible in your sky.
Glad you got it all figured out.
