[Plate Solving]* How Come Celestron StarSense Will Not Complete Plate Solving Alignment? (Answer: Contact Celestron Support For Plate Solving Issues - This Was A Hardware Issue With The Camera)

Other night using my Evo 8 HD with Star sense auto align, after doing a recalibration (which I do every few observations, even though Celestron says once) and the alignment, began getting error: ‘Star Sense Error: could not plate solve the image’ using Sky Safari after successfully completing only the 1 of 3 alignments (Solved plate!). It finds stars on second of third attempt, but can’t plate solve the image and then ‘resets’ to 0 of 3 alignments and tries all over again resulting in same error. Same thing in Sky Portal albeit with different verbiage in error msg (will retry at new position). Current time date and location are correct. Deleted sky safari and reinstalled to no avail. When I used the Hand controller alignment was successful. Placed ticket w Celestron still awaiting reply. Bought scope this past April and everything had been fine until now. Some older threads indicated it could be bad WiFi module yet the HC works. Running IOS 17.6.1 which updated couple weeks ago. I don’t want to get in ***** match between you and Celestron.

Keiron Smith - tried last night, four attempts total, all ultimately successful, but with the same ‘%@’ error and retries between, despite finding plenty of stars (100 stars) each capture.

Two in SS7 Pro: initial alignment then SSAA calibration - took 5 tries to get 3 successful plate solves. Unsuccessful solves showed '%2' error.

Two in SkyPortal: initial alignment then SSAA calibration - took 4 tries to get 3 successful plate solves. Unsuccessful solves showed '%2' error.

Let me know if you want AUX bus logs.

"Ultimately successful" is a good result!

Since SkyPortal is using the SS6 Pro code base the '%2' error has probably been there for many years - unless the SSAA firmware has been changed.

Please continue testing the minimal Celestron WiFi setup.

    1. SS7 Pro / SkyPortal app
    2. Evo mount
    3. Celestron WiFi

    Nothing else.

Please keep reporting the success rate here.

    Thanks!

Keiron Smith - Will do. And yes, since the SSAA firmware hasn't been updated since 2014 (per Celestron's site), it's either likely been there since then or there's some environmental change that's now causing the error across many SSAA installations. It's not the number of found stars, have seen failures with 100 stars and success with as few as 43. For reference, here's what a good/successful SSAA AUX bus message looks like:

I'll continue to log and if/when it fails again, will try the Starsense Auto Align via the hand controller during the same session to see if that has the same behaviour.
