[Database]* Missing PGC and NGC Galaxies (Solution: Fix In Next Update)

Since the last update, which i think updated some databases, i can't find for some galaxies that used to be there. I am using SkySafari to identify some faint galaxies in a photo i took of the the region around Corona Borealis. A couple of weeks ago i saved some screen shots which showed the NGC, PGC, IC and UGC galaxies of interest in the area. Today, a search for some of the PGC galaxies report the objects as not found.

As an example, i can no longer find PGC 54982. There were a couple more missing but i did not record which ones.

I am using SkySafari v7.5.0 on IOS 17.7 on an iPad.

The Android version does include PGC 54982.

PGC 54982 does not appear when searched but one of it's other IDs ACO 2061 does find it.  ABELL 2061.

Thanks Bruce, but that doesn't really help me unmuddle things. I took took screen shots which showed the galaxies up to about mag 16 or so which showed the PGC numbers. I am now using those as reference to identify galaxies and don't have ACO or Able numbers. Also, i am not use these are identical objects even though in the same area.

I tried recreating the screen shots by selecting the deep sky magnitude limit. But what shows up is now completely different.  For instance, PGC 54959 mag 15.88 and NGC 5925 mag 15.33 don't show up anymore (although can be searched for). But PGC 1937470 mag 16.66 does show up. Something is amiss.

Again, this worked fine before and still works on my android phone.

p.s.  Keiron, i don't seem to have login credentials to view the unfuddle page referenced above.

    Stephen,

The unfuddle link is for developers and myself.

Please provide any screenshots or whatnot that can help further identify and reproduce the issue(s) you are experiencing.

    Thanks!

Below are a few screen shots

1 the original screen shot on IOS showing PGC 54982 and NGC 5924

2 Android DSS limit to 17.0

3 Android showing PGC 54982 and NGC 5924

4 Android details for PGC 54982 as mag 15.68

5 IOS DSS limit as 17.0

6 IOS screen shot missing PGC 54982 but does include PGC 1937470 and ACO 2067 (NGC 5924)

7 IOS details for PGC 1937470 as mag 16.65

8 IOS search for PGC 54982 not found

9 IOS details for NGC 5924 now labeled on chart as ACO 2067

I read up on Abell and ACO numbers and now understand that these are just two different formats for stating an Abell galaxy cluster catalogue number (with the ACO prefix being the currently preferred syntax). I also understand where i am getting confused between NGC 5924 and Abell 2067 with the latest presentation of galaxies and the clusters they might belong to.

From SF IOS, if i query ACO 2067, SkySafari reports this as a galaxy cluster and shows a large circle on the chart outlining the extend of the cluster. If i search for NGC 5924, and show the details page (info), SkySafari shows the primary identifier as ACO 2067 and only includes the NGC number in the list of alternate catalog numbers. I think this is incorrect and not what it used to do. It does identify the selected object as a galaxy and provides the correct details for the galaxy. Also, on the chart, both the galaxy and that galaxy cluster have the same identifier.

What it used to do is use the NGC designation for the galaxy as the primary identifier and label the galaxy on the chart using the NGC number. The Abell id was included in the list of catalog numbers. Although i find that a little confusing as well since it's not an alternate id for the galaxy, but a membership in that cluster.
