I'm going to purchase a SkyFi III in the next couple of weeks. I was wondering if SkySafari/SkyFi will automatically set the date and time on the AVX? It's really annoying (and painful when its cold!) that the AVX makes me reenter date and time every time I use it.

Bill Tschumy Neil,
As long as it is not a GPS model (and it sounds like it is not) then we should be able to set the time and date.
Isn't your AVX remembering the time from the last time you used it? And the location?
Generally (for NexStar mounts) you can just connect without star aligning and that will set the time & location. Then you disconnect and do a star alignment using the hand controller wit the correct time & location. Then after the star alignment, connect again and you should be good to go.

Neil Martin Bill.
Thanks for the reply. The AVX remembers location and date and time. The location is useful, assuming you are in the same spot, but remembering date/time as of the time the AVX was powered off is not. I'm only a couple of days into using the AVX, but it seems to me that the Nexstar is a cumbersome interface that feels like technology from the 1990s! It sounds like Sky Safari/SkyFi will make setup and use of the AVX a lot less arduous. Other than the controller, I do like the AVX mount.
As a matter of interest, is there a reason why the star alignment has to be done using the Nexstar controller?

Bill Tschumy The star alignment needs to be done via the hand controller because the NexStar external command set doesn't have any commands for alignment. This is the case for most other mounts as well. Some mounts (e.g. Meade) won't even allow us to connect to it if they haven't been star aligned.
