SkySafari 5 Pro | SkyFi 2 + SkyWatcher EQ6 Connection Fail (Solution: SkyFi 2 Broken, Read For Troubleshooting Tips)

Good morning

Last week I buy your skyfi to connect it to the Eq6 Pro ( Skywatcher ) mount.

After connecting via WiFi (10.0.0.1) I tried to connect but SkySafari Pro tells me that the mount is not responding.

Is it possible to receive a step by step guide for this frame? Thank

P.S. IPHONE 6S

    Luca,

There are several things that could be going wrong.

    1. Are you sure you are using the correct SkyWatcher serial cable?  A generic serial cable will not work.
    2. Did you star align the mount before trying to connect?  Many mounts will not respond without being star aligned.
    3. Did you set your scope type to "SkyWatcher SynScan"?
    4. From SkySafari, can you get to the "SkyFi Settings Web Page" from the Telescope Setup screen?  That will confirm you are really able to talk to the SkyFi.
    5. If you are using "Auto-Detect SkyFI" try turning it off.

Yes, the 10.0.0.1 address is ok.  When you turn it off, does the text field say the SkyFi IP address is 10.0.0.1?  Port number is 4030?  If so I can't see why the error would be different from when using auto-detect.

You have the cable running from the SkyFi 3 to the bottom of the hand controller?

"skysafari 6 pro can make a wireless network connection to the scope, but the scope is not responding"

this is the response from the program if i use auto-detect or no !

OK, I do need to know exactly which SkyFi you have.  Is the device rectangular or does it have a "waist" (narrower in the middle).  The former is SkyFi 2 and the latter is SkyFi 3.  If you bought it from us recently then it must be the newer SkyFi 3.

It sounds like you are doing everything correctly.  The problem could be:

    1. The serial port on the SkyFi could be failing
    2. The serial cable could be bad
    3. The SynScan hand controller jack could be bad

It is difficult to figure out what the problem is.  If you could try controlling the scope from a different app from a computer, that would validate the cable and the hand controller.

Depending on how technical you are, you could hook up the SkyFi to a terminal program on a computer to see if anything is sent out SkyFi serial port.

I wasn't aware that anyone still had SkyFi 2 units to sell.  We have been out of them for well over a year.

"today a make a upgrade for synscan hand controller with the serial cable and now is with ultimate firmware"

Are you saying it is working now after the upgrade?

hello ... the skyfi has been bought in Italy, you tell me that it is no longer supported?
No I did the update just to have a check if the serial cable of the hand controller worked and the respective cable,
and I can tell you that it works !! but the skyfi does not work right.
A question, USB port is for updates? can I attach a usb-rs232 cable to the hand control?

    Luca,

The older SkyFi is still supported in the sense that we will help you trouble shoot.  However, we are no longer making firmware updates for it.  However, I'm not aware of any issues with SkyFi 2 and the SkyWatcher mounts.

No, you cannot use the USB port with a USB-to-RS232 adapter.  This adapters require drivers installed and you can't install a driver on SkyFi.

The USB port is not just for updates.  You can control USB mounts using that port.

So, are you saying you updated the firmware in the hand controller using the same serial cable plugged into the bottom of the hand controller?  If that went OK, then probably the serial cable and hand controller is fine.  I assume you had to use a null modem adapter when updating the firmware?  You would **not** use this when using SkyFi to control the mount.

The only way I know of to determine if the SkyFi RS-232 port is working is to hook it up to a terminal program and see if command are sent out when you try to connect from SkySafari.

Hello Bill Meanwhile, thanks for the answers, the update was done by computer, with a serial port (we still have those computers and thank goodness that I have an apple :-))
This evening I have borrowed a module skysafary bluetooth adapter and I must tell you that everything works beautifully without even the alignment.I have this fear that the rectangular box to have problems one last test I could do is not to use the serial cable, but another cable that I had the same cable line

Are you saying you were able to connect to the mount over bluetooth?  Is this using SkySafari on a Mac?  If so that would indicate the cable and your hand box are fine.

If possible I could try to return the SkyFi 2 as it sounds like it could be defective.
