Is It Possible, Using SkyFi 3, To StarSense Auto Align, Then Control Telescope, Without Using The Hand StarSense Hand Control

have a SkyFi 3 i Upgrade firm ware to 1.3.4 I have a Celestron CGX with StarSense. I tried connecting A USB Cable to USB A port on skyFi 3 & the other end which has a mini usb. To the bottom of Hand Control ( tried both Starsense and Stock hand control) would not work. In fact the hand controls stayed lit even thou the mount was turned off. I was worried I hurt something but have verified that both Hand controls and mount still work.
I also have an early starsense hand control with tele type plug on bottom and have ordered the
Celestron Nexstar RS 232 PC Interface Cable to try using it in bottom of that hand control. Will that work? What do I have to do to use one of the new hand controls with mini USB//

    Hi Phillip,

    1. What software are you using? What version of the software?
    2. What OS are you running?
    3. What error message, of any, are you seeing?

Please provide a detailed report of everything in your setup.

    Thanks!

    Philip,

It is normal for the hand controller to remain powered when plugged into the USB port on the SkyFI 3.  This won't hurt anything.

You cannot use a USB-to-RS232 adapter between the SkyFi and the hand controller.  This is because those adapters need drivers installed to work and you can't install drivers on a SkyFi.

We will need you to answer Keiron's questions before we can provide much more help.

I now have a Celestron Nexstar RS232 PC interface cable plugged into SkyFi 3 and a Starsense hand control bottom(with tele type jack). Hand control is plugged into aux on Celestron CGX mount. I can control my telescope via SkySafari 6 Pro.

SkyFi3 firmware is upgraded to 1.3.4 - I am using an IPAD running IOS 10.3.2   - I also have a another starsense hand control with usb (rs232) in bottom.

But I really want to to be able to do a star sense auto alignment, then control telescope, without using the hand control, using just SkyFi 3. Is that possible?? If so what other equipment do I need to purchase. You have the greatest equipment and software. Thank You Phillip Babcock

    Phillip,

You should be able to do a StarSense alignment with the hand controller (either the older RS-232 type or the new USB type) and then control the mount from SkySafari via SkyFi.  It wasn't clear to me from your message what the problem is.  Does this work with the older HC but not the newer USB one?

This should work with the USB StarSense HC and all you need is a standard USB cable to do it.  You need a cable with a Type A connector on one side and a USB-mini connector on the other.

You will always need to connect through the bottom of the hand controller when using SkyFi.

If you are willing to buy the Celestron SkyPortal Wi-Fi dongle, then you can bypass the hand controller entirely and start a StarSense alignment from SkySafari.  However this means you cannot use the HC at all for anything other than using the slew buttons (and Celestron even recommends against this).  I personally find connecting through the hand controller gives the best of both worlds.

Bill, Thank you for the speedy reply.. You answered my questions. It is working as you described with both hand controls. Was really trying to see if I could do away using 0 hand controls. My skyshed Pod is up on my roof and I like to control from the porch downstairs.

Thank you again for such a great product. Been using your products for about 5 years.
