Why Are The Karenchenko 1,2,3 Clusters Duplicated In The Database? (Answer: Likely An Error In The Database We Use)

Hi,

When I use the search function and type in "ASCC" (= All-sky compiled catalogue), all open clusters "Kharchenko" are listed. Is this correct? I would expect ASCC 1, 2 ect.

On the other hand, typing in "Kharchenko", all "Kharchenko" clusters are listed, obviously - but with no cross reference to ASCC.

I also noted, "Kharchenko 1", "Kharchenko 2", "Kharchenko 3", are listed twice, in different constellations, respectively. Is this a bug in the database?

Not a big deal, just stumbled upon while playing with Sky Safari.

Thank you for this great software.

Best regards

Walter

    Walter,

We looked into this briefly.  It seems that Kharchenko is the lead author of the All Sky Compiled Catalog.  I think that may be why ASCC is listed as an alias of the Kharchenko catalog.  Without further digging I can't immediately say why the  the Karenchenko 1,2,3 clusters are duplicated.  It may be that he had two catalogs of clusters.  It could be an error in our source databases.

    Hi Bill,

Thank you for looking into this. According to the Interstellar Deep Sky Atlas, "Kharchenko 2" and "Kharchenko 3" are plotted in the constellation Scutum. All other "Kharchenko" clusters are plotted as ASCC.

In the meantime I found another double entry: Feibelman 1 (Cygnus and Carina).

    Best regards

    Walter,

We looked in our source database files and the Kharchenko clusters are really listed twice in different constellations.  This is probably a bug in the source databases, but in general we take the databases as they are and don't try to correct errors.  So this is not a SkySafari error per se, but an error in the catalogs we use.

The Feibelman 1 is a different issue and is a SkySafari bug.  It happens because there is also a Feinstein 1 cluster.  The way we search, the "Fei" abbreviation is matching both.  This is not my code so I don't fully understand it.  This is probably something we can address but we feel it is pretty minor.  This problem has been there for many years and you are the first to notice (or at least report) it.
