Why Is Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner Missing From The Database? (Solution: File -> Preferences -> Startup -> Increase The Default From 600 to 2000- Read On!)

It's in SkySafari and its likely the brightest comet of 2018,  Who fell asleep at the wheel?

21P/Giacobini-Zinner. Make it happen in the next Starry Night Data File download please.

    Hi Stargazers,

Look in File -> Preferences -> Startup -> Increase the number of comets read in at start up to 2000.  Open the Comet.txt file to see how many comets are include in the file.  If you want to be able to see ALL the comets in the file make sure the number of comets read in at startup is equal to/greater than the number in the text file.  This applies to asteroids and satellites too.

You can also add individual objects in Starry Night using the Orbit Editor.  So, even if the specific object is not included in the file you can get the orbital elements and add it in yourself.

However, I know that 21P/Giacobini-Zinner is in the Comets.txt file.

Btw, in Help -> User Guide -> you can read about how to optimize your Starry Night experience.  The user guide is completely comprehensive covering everything from registration to building your own deepsky catalogs.

    Thanks!

Absolutely - here I am trying to use SN7 Pro to run my telescope and this comet is not in the database. Back to Stellarium, again!
