[Bug] SkySafari 6 Pro for Android hangs when adding equipment

The app hangs with a busy circle when I try to add a new pair of binocs. Confirmed it three times, but haven't tried with a new scope, etc. I have to force stop the app and sometimes clear cache before it will start normally.

Google Pixel
Android 9

Thanks.

    Len,

Thanks for reporting the problem here.

We need to figure out what is unusual about your device or setup.

    1. I assume you have normal internet access when this is happening?  Are you connected to a Wi-Fi interface that doesn't have internet.

    2. Could you please try this with the other equipment types to see if it happens there?

    3. We had a number of testers on Android 9 but not as many as on other versions of Android.  It is possible there is an interaction there.

    4. Surprised to hear you needed to clear the cache to get it to start.  What happens if you don't?

    1. On Wi-Fi both at home (and at work 😁) with internet access

    2. Same result with all types, just confirmed

    4. Usually killing the app was enough, but a time or two if I didn't clear cache, I would get the splash and then a totally black secret at restart. Usually just stopping the app was enough, though.

    Thanks!

How very strange.  I don't suppose you have any sort of firewall running that might prevent access to our LiveSky servers?

Maybe something would show up in  the log file.  Here is how to retrieve it:

    1. Run the app and make it hang, then force quit it.

    2. Run the app again and go to the Help screen.  Choose "Email Log File" from the bottom.

    3. Send the log file to "bill@simcur.com"

I will look at the file and see if I notice anything that could be responsible for the hang.

Sorry for the problems.  Not a very auspicious start for you.

    Well..... 😊

Unfortunately, it abends when I choose that option. Just *poof* and it vanishes. I'm running Nova Prime launcher if that makes any difference (it shouldn't).

Fortunately I have almost all my equipment already in there from my SS5 files.

I even gave it a full power-off reboot first. Also it locks on home Wi-Fi, work Wi-Fi and on data, so no firewall issues. Plus I was able to create a LiveSky account, so...

    Thanks.

I had reported problems with adding equipment when Beta Group 4 was enlisted to test these features. Several release updates have come out since that time so when I saw your post, I decided to retest. First, I had a Wait or Close App when adding a new scope and chose Wait with no issue. Then, I tried to add a second Scope and it did crash BUT it saved my entry. On the third pass with an edit I ended up with another Wait and found 85% Android O/S memory was in use and I have a 4 GB RAM device. Most still have 2-3 GB. V6 is definitely more memory intensive and uses more than all previous releases but so does every app update. Once these Phone manufacturers start making 6-8,12 GB of RAM phones and app developers start releasing more memory and stop leaving their apps memory resident we'll all be better off for it.

I'm on an 18 month old Pixel with 4 GB. SS6 (according to the phone) averages 30 MB with a max of 268.

I'm sure Bill will get it all sorted. Ain't no thang 😁

Len: I got the file and have passed it to someone to look at.

John: Sounds like you are unable to add equipment at all, is that correct?  After a crash, try to restart and then email a log file to "bill@simcur.com" by using the option at the bottom of the Help screen.  I would like to see what is reported.

No Bill you got it wrong. In my very lengthy explanation I wrote it saved the Settings each time it crashed. No equipment data was lost.

John, I am unable to find your report.  Do you have a link to it?  Unfortunately, the search capability of the forums when searching for a person's name is not the best.

I just replied to the original posters report, Bill so it should be above these. In fact it's one above yours - right above Len's reply.

Oh, I see it.  Yes, I suspect SS6 does take more memory but I'm aware of only one report of running out of memory.

I'm not a regular Android user.  How do you see how much memory a particular app is using?
