Why are different DSS images in SS5 Pro and SS6 Pro?
The difference can be seen in the attachments.
Can I change it to be the same as SS5Pro?

We changed the DSS images from phase2_gsc2 to phase2_gsc1. There were two reasons for this:
1. The gsc1 images are much smaller (almost x10) and download much faster. Since we've added the batch download of entire observing lists in SS6, the size became important.
2. The gsc1 images better approximate what you will see in a telescope. Since SkySafari is primarily an observing tool, we thought that would be more useful.
There are no current plans to switch back or offer a choice. If we get enough pushback we can reconsider.
Thank you Bill for the answer.
Downloading DSS images is now certainly faster, but for visual observation and larger apertures, changing DSS images is unfortunate.
It is important for me to know how the object looks so I can identify it.
Unfortunately, despite all the new features of SS6, I have to go back to SS5.
I hope there will be more users who would welcome the settings between gsc1 and gsc2 in the SS6.
Thank you.
Lis,
Sorry the new images don't work for you. What sized scope are you using that you need to longer exposure?
I will think about the possibility of allowing a choice, but can't promise anything. In the 8 months since this came out on iOS, I think only one other person has asked for this change to be reversed.
Hi Bill
I use a 12" (305mm) aperture.
For example, I have tried to compare DSS PN image "Jones 1" between SS5 and SS6.
What I see visually in the telescope is the DSS image from SS5.
DSS image from SS6 does not show anything from PN shape.
Thank you.
I have one more comment or idea on this post.
If the Deep Sky Magnitude Limit in the SS6 PRO version set to 18.0 (see SkySafari 6 Comparison Charts), would not it be appropriate to match this magnitude also with the DSS resolution of the images ? - Only as an choice for the PRO version and only with the possibility to downloading single pictures.
I apologize for repeating the query about gsc1 and gsc2.
While I can understand Bill's points, seeing much more detail is what i use/expect from DSS downloads, so having the option for the larger file/longer exposure detail of phase2_gsc2 would better meet my needs as well. Thanks Lis for clarifying this difference between SS5 & SS6. Kind regards, Chadwick
