[Bug - Needs Path To Reproduction] SkySafari 6 Plus Crashes When Creating New Observations (Fixed In 6.0.3.28)

I just upgraded from SkySafari 5 Plus to SkySafari 6 Plus on my Android device. Unfortunately, the app crashes every single time I try to create a new observation. I have tried from the object info screen, as well as from an observing list. I have tried with different objects. Still the app crashes 100% of the time.

Sometimes it can be restarted on the first try, but sometimes it takes two tries. It smells like some sort of file access issue, as if it doesn't have permission to modify the observations, yet I am able to add equipment and observing lists, and I can view old observations.

Sorry you are having this problem.  We are not getting reports of this from others so it must be something unusual about your set up.

It would help if you could send me an Android log file.  Let the app crash and then restart it.  Then got to Help > Email Log File and send the log to yourself.  Then please forward it to me (bill@simcur.com) with a brief note that the app is crashing when creating an observation.  Hopefully the log file will help us understand what is happening.

I should point out that I am using SkySafari to control my telescope through a Wi-Fi AP, so connection to the internet is not possible. Perhaps it is trying to upload the new observation via LiveSky.

If you just try to make an observation while not connected to the scope, does that succeed?

We have tested this pretty thoroughly with our SkyFi and the Celestron Wi-Fi modules, but if you are using something else, maybe that is the issue.

Thanks for your response. I am experiencing the same behavior when not connected to the telescope. I get the same result if I am connected to the internet, or if the device's Wi-Fi is disabled. I can add objects to existing observing lists, and view old observations of the object, but I can't create a new observation.

Please send me the log file and I'll take a look.

I emailed a copy of the log file. Of course I am engaging in wild speculation (which is always dangerous), but the entry:

E/AndroidRuntime( 7979): java.lang.IllegalStateException: ParseObject has no data for 'location'. Call fetchIfNeeded() to get the data.

makes me think it's not getting my location, which would explain why it can't create a new observation. FYI, I am using a user-defined location (chosen by sticking a pin in the map). I switched to a pre-defined location from the built-in list and got the same result.

I should point out that I have been using the same hardware for the last 12 mos with v5 and have not had any issues.

So my email with the log file did not go through. Not sure how can I submit the attachment.

Did you send it to "bill@simcur.com"?  I'm not sure why it wouldn't go through.

    @Bdwissman

What exactly is your "Wi-Fi AP"?

    Thanks!

I am using a Wi-Fi to Serial bridge that uses an ESP8266 chip to create a Wi-Fi Access Point through which the Android device communicates. The ESP8266 sends TTL signals to an RS232 converter which in turn sends the commands to my scope (Meade LX90). I have been doing this for the last 12 mos with v. 5 and have not had any issues.

    Hi Barry,

    Can you tell us:

What kind of Android device you have, and what version of Android?

How many Observations, Observing Sessions, Observing Sites, and pieces of equipment you have, and whether or not it matches what you can see when logged into LiveSky?

    Barry,

Has your problem been addressed?  I believe last Thursday's release should have had a fix for your crash.

Please accept my apologies for not responding sooner - busy week! I was able to update my software, and am now able to create new observations when connected to the internet. I have not yet been able to test the case where I am using my Android device's Wi-Fi to connect to my scope, but hope to do so in the next few days.

Per Ros' question, I have SkySafari 6 installed on an iPhone in addition to the Android device. This seems to be causing some duplication of equipment in LiveSky. My observations seem to be correct across all three platforms.

Thanks for your attention in this matter.
