No Quasars in Observing Planner search results

Hello!

Some days ago I was trying to create a list of Quasars with the Observing Planner in SkySafari Pro 6 running on iOS, but I got no quasars in the search results.

I tried several ways like filtering by Object Type, by restricting the magnitudes, by restricting to catalogs and even by restricting to constellations but I never got Quasars in the search results.

Lets put a couple of examples:

Quasar 3C 273 in Virgo, Mag. 12.85 (as per SkySafari's Object Info)

Other names (from Object Info): 4C +02.32 and PKS 1226+023

I can find it by using the Search option on the toolbar, so it is in the database.

In Observing Planner I select "Stars" and "Galaxies", Maginitude: 12 - 13 and finally I restrict to only Virgo constellation.

4875 Objects are found from different catalogs but none from 3C, 4C or PKS.

Quasar PG 1634+706 in Draco, Mag. 14.65 (as per SkySafari's Object Info)

I can find it by using the Search option on the toolbar, so it is in the database.

In Observing Planner I select all object types, Maginitude: 14 - 15, restrict to catalog PG and finally I restrict to Draco constellation.

556 Objects are found but none from PG catalog.

I have also tried te next search:

All object types, Mag. 12 - 13, restrict to catalog 3C and restrict to constellation Virgo.

4991 objects were found, including asteroids and Maya satellites.

I don't know all the objects in the Third Cambridge Catalogue of Radio Sources (3C) but I don't think there are asteroids or satellites in it.

Am I doing something wrong with my searches or is this a bug in the Observing Planner module?

Thanks!

I'd also like to know the answer to this. It would be really great if we could have quasars as another object type in deep sky that we could have checked for "always on". If I was working on any of my observing lists and there was a quasar nearby within my magnitude settings, I would definitely take a look, but I'm not sure of a way to do that?

I have asked Tim, who wrote the code that searches the database, what is going on.  You may be right that we may need to add a "Quasar" type in order to search for them.  I'll let you now what he says.

    Hi Bill!

I just updated my SkySafari Pro to version 6.4.0.3 and I see you added a "Quasar" type in the Observing Planner.

I have made some quick searches and it works great!

Still not able to restrict to specific catalogs (3C, 4C, PGC), but it really doesn't matter because I can filter by "Restrict to Ranges" fields.

Thank you so much for listening the users as well as for your commitment to make the app even better.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'm a bit surprised that the restrict to catalog (especially PCG) doesn't work.  I can ask our database person about that.
