For SkySafari AR | 24 Hour Time Format And Localization

Hello!

SkySafari looks gorgeous on my phone, but there are 2 issues I am facing. Both are linked to localization.

There is no way to manually specify the time format to use. My phone is configured in English (Ireland) and time format set to 24H. But SkySafari displays only the time in AM/PM. It would be good to be able to specify a format not linked to the time on the phone. Not only for people like myself who have a specific format regardless of the geo setting, but also for travelers who might want to set the format to what ever area they are traveling. If I travel to the USA, I'll want to set SkySafari to display in AM/PM because everybody talks that way. When I'm back in Europe (say Switzerland or France) I'll want to set it to 24H for the same reason.

And for the same reason, it would be good to be able to set the display language manually. So that when I'm showing the sky to people in France, I can display the French names of stars and planets... whereas when I'm in USA, I can set to display that same stuff, but in English.

There is an app called Mobile Planetarium that lets me do that very easily. I really feel this functionality would be good on SkySafari... This is what it looks like on Mobile Planetarium:

Maybe I've missed a setting somewhere, but I haven't been able to find a place to configure that...

Hey Gilles Under Settings - Formats, you will find the option to switch between 12 hour and 24 hour for time.

As for changing the language within the app, Bill indicated in 2017 they were working towards this with the below post in another thread, but I can't say where they are with that:

    1.  I wouldn't call changing the language a "simple" suggestion.  This is a huge task.  We have been slowly working towards this goal over the past 6 months.  Right now we are localizing the SkyPortal app, but most of the changes should carry over to SkySafari.

    Hope this helps!

Sounds like you might be several versions behind. Formats is now a main menu option that addresses one of your issues.

That's the version I get from the play store. Am on Android 9. Where do I get a more recent version?

The newest version should be on the play store if you have an internet connection. Not sure why it wouldn't give you an option to update.

I'm testing on the free build 6.0... paying versions are 6.1. That might explain. Pity the free build isn't at same version... How can one test properly...

    Hi Giles,

Thank you Chris for your assist here!

SkySafari AR is a very trimmed down version, developed specifically for the budding astronomy newb, and as such has purposely had many functions removed, and the UI minimized, so as to avoid confusion, keeping the experience has simple as possible.  The developers have to draw the line somewhere, and your asked for feature just did not make the cut in the AR version.

We also offer SkySafari 6 Plus and Pro, both rich with databases, and feature complete for the advanced or professional astronomers.

Regarding localization, it is a dream project for us as well, and we hope to make headway in 2019.

Thanks for using the community forums and sharing your feedback. Please use the feature request forum to share any other ideas you have.

    Keiron,

Being a Starry Night customer  (stuck on version 7, because I don't run Windows  10 - and will not for the forseable future) I decided to make a leap of faith and purchase  SkySafari 6 Pro (there is a promotional offer that started this week-end for the eclipse - thank-you for that!).

    So... 24H issue solved. :)

As for localization, I can see that only the English version is provided either in the basic free edition and the pro version... So this is almost a work from scratch situation. As a native French speaker who's lived in the USA and learned to read and write over there, I'm happy to help with the translation effort. :-P

An excellent upgrade, Gilles!  I know you will love SkySafari 6 Pro!  And, if we need help with localization I'll be sure to let you know.

    Thanks!
